kathy, my son was on adderal two years ago and also experienced more aggressivness and oppositional behaviour he was emmediatley taken off and put on dexedrine than later switched to concerta and risperidal. he been steady on the concerta and respiridal for almost year and a half and has been doing really well. He also attends a behaviour day camp through the whole summer which is very helpful. keep in mind what works for one child does not work for another its all trial and error. also dont worry to much about the sugar thing ive just attended a seminar and there finding that adhd is not linked to diet, its genetics, mind you like any child given too much yes there going to act out but i was assured that it has no possible links to adhd behaviour as said the alergy specialist. if you find out other wise could you pass it on as i often wonder what the specialist says is even factual. good luck

Kathy K - my son did not do well on Adderall or Concerta. It made him more agitated and aggressive. He was then put on the generic for Rtalin and is doing very well. Unfortunately, the hardest thing is getting the right medication as all children are different.

First time in this room - my son is 14 and having a hard time controlling his temper and focusing. First year in high school and I know his body is changing rapidly - hormones and all. Last time he took meds he was 10. The last meds he was on was concerta, worked okay but did not like what it did to him. No eye contact, wouldn't eat and zombie like. I am trying to find something natural and checked out stuff on line. Found one called Vaxa. Says it starts working in 2 weeks. Cost 35 bucks for 60 tablets. Anyone heard of or tried it? Thanks

Aaron: yes, ADHD medications , some of them , have traces of crystal meth; hence the formal name "methalphenadate". But thanks for "clearing" that up for us.

I think every child is different and you must do what is right for you and your family and what you feel good about doing. I think diet is the answer for some, medication for other, herbal medicines for some, and a combination of things for some. Some children are ADD, or ADHD, or have other things going on like tics or ODD , etc. Find the system/program that works for you and feel confident about it. My son takes Ritalin LA and Ritalin (reg. dose). I have done all of my homework about the drug and it has been greatly imrpoved since it's first big introduction in the 80's. We also try to curb the sugar he gets daily, and have consistant behavior consequences and rewards. Also, did you know that kids in early elementary school need 9-10 hrs. of sleep each night? Lack of sleep can directly affect the ADHD child in the classroom. My son goes to bed every night by 7:30. Going to bed later makes him totally uncooperative the next morning and usually has a tough time at school that day. If he wants to stay up late for a special t.v. program or something like that, he has to rest a while in the afternoon after getting home from school.

It's your child- do what's right for you and him/her!

Has anyone tried neurofeedback? I am wondering about the home versions as well. I'm considering neurofeedback for my son who has adhd--we've tried a wheat and gluten free diet for a year and have recently stoped because he wasnt getting enough nutrition (he was just to picky of an eater). I have wanted to avoid mediation but feel we are running out of options so we tried strettera and the side affects were terrible for him--aggression increased and he ws just so emotionally unstable--so we took him off. Now I am debating whether or not i want him on medication at all .I feel like it set him back 10 steps.

I have twin boys who are on dexedrine for adhd. My one son is ok taking it but my other son most times refuses & has been hiding his pills under the bottom trim of the kitchen cupourds. The funny thing is that his marks were great his lowest mark was one c.

I started the search for "curing" our daughters behavioral issues by putting her on the Feingold Diet -- http://www.feingold.org/index.html . We had her on a totally PURE diet for 3 months (very challenging for the cook in our house, i.e. me, but well worth it). Once I thought her system was "clean", I slowing reintroduced gluten, then casien, etc. Within 6 months, we determined that the root of her problem was caramel color, and food dies. As long as she doesn't eat anything with caramel color or red, blue or yellow food coloring, she is fine. Figuring this out has changed our lives. I also give her the following suppliments, which I believe help her cognitive abilities: Nordic Naturals DHA Jr. Fish Oil and Integrative Therapeutics CHILD ESSENCE multi-vitamins which are high in B6 and B12. That's our magic formula and I hope this info might help someone out there.

Hello there, Please be brave and tell your doctor that you do not want your son on drugs. My ex husband and I both have adult ADHD. When I was a child in the 1970s I was diagnosed as being severely hyper active, and after going to many doctors that my mum dragged me along to as a child, to find out what was wrong with me? and why I was so easily irritated all the time by the smallest things, and why I could not concentrate at school ( however quite bizarrely, I could concentrate at ballet? ) A young doctor straight out of university with all the latest information, told Mum that no she is NOT a bad mother like other old fashioned doctors suggested, and that he believed I had a condition called severe hyper-activity syndrome, (now called ADHD or ADD). There were NO drugs for this back then, and the doctor suggested that mum put me on a very strict diet !! called the DR FEINGOLD diet, ( I think that is the spelling?)
Anyhow Mum was desperate to help me, so she agreed to get me onto this diet and stick to it, to see if it helped me.
Let me tell you IT WAS AS MUM DESCRIBES IT, A MIRACLE DIET AND CURE. She said I did not like the diet at first and hated going with out all the delicious foods that other kids were allowed to eat, like lollies, cool drink, and anything artificially flavoured, as well as certain fruits and vegetables that I seemed to react to. However Once mum worked out the foods that kept me calm and the foods that made me feel so incredibly bad and irritated all the time, she had won the fight, and found the cure.
She really stuck to this diet and I had no choice but to eat what I was given. Although I wanted to be the same as the other kids and eat food like them, after a while I worked out that those bad foods really did make me feel different to the good foods, and I would only ask for the good foods, even when my mother was not there like at a birthday party.
The problem today I feel, is that both mothers and fathers work these days, and mums and dads are tired at the end of the day, and they just want quick fixes and quick foods ( usually high in preservatives and food colour unfortunately). Even when told that their child would benefit enormously from major diet change and home cooked meals, most parents opt for the quick solution and give their child drugs instead! and then the wrong foods on top of that !! No wonder these kids feel bad.
The long term effect of this healthy diet though , has SO MANY health benefits compared to it's rival dexamphetamine, which no one knows yet what the long term effects will be from taking this medication, which works exactly like speed !!!!
I do not understand how parents can load their children up with so many preservatives and food colours and then feel forced to give them a pill, because their child feels so irritable and cranky all the time. Plus they probably have not seen their parents all day, so on top of that may act up to get attention.
Anyhow, this is only my opinion, and I am not judging anyone for how they choose to deal with their children's problem, I just wish parents would be made to put their kids on the diet like I was at the age of 6, instead of drugs which only hide the problem really.
I know a lot about dexamphetamine actually, because I chose to stay with the Dr Feingold diet, which really works for me, and my ex husband at the age of 30, was put onto DEX for adult ADHD.
Well it seemed to really help him at first, for about 6 months. Then he did not notice them working anymore, so the terrible doctor who only cared about his pay cheque, kept raising the dose from 3 a day 5mg x 3. A year later 5mg x 6 a day. A year after that , the third year now... 5mg x 9 a day . Then 2 years after that ,still on them!!! The dose is now 5mg x 12 a day.
and sometimes 15 a day, when he forgets if he has had them.
We ended up splitting because of dexamphetamine too, we were together for 19 years, and one sunday., just looking at my husband lying on the floor on a mattress in the spare room, just lying there trying to sleep the tablets off again all day sunday, as always so that he could get through another week. I could not take it another day longer, just looking at the drug addict my husband had become. The mood swings, the hallucinations, and aggression, and ignoring us and being completely anti social. I had to end the relationship for my sons and my sanity.
So i left him, and he stopped taking the meds, became depressed and withdrawn. Started sending threats to me, and my son and I had to keep hiding from him and shifting house all the time, while trying to hold down a full time job and help my son with bullies upsetting him at school. This was a very hard time. By the way my ex husband finally found me and sat on me while he punched my head 12 times in front of my mother and my son, and while this was happening my Dad was dying in hospital from a blood disease..... So please believe me when I you, that you must not let a doctor put your son on this HORRIBLE drug!!! Please try the diet for more than 2 months and also get him onto fish oil !!! Brilliant stuff, excellent for memory and the brain, and maybe some magnesium and vitamin B6. Another natural alternative for fidgety kids is Kalm kids by Natures Own. Spelt with a K.
YOUR Natropath is the best doctor for this trust me.!!!!
God bless your son

My six year old has ADHD, and I went to the library, and checked out the Feingold DIet for Hyperactive Children. He explains what kids like ours should eat, and shouldnt eat. Its not complicated to do, and if you check out the food you are preparing, and see what kind of preservatives they have in them, start elimanating them. Find products that are pure and all natural. Believe me when I say, IT WORKS!! My son has done a complete turn around on this diet, and it is hard to tell he is the same child. He has an easier time with his school work, his concentration and attention span has increased. Its wonderful, and I highly recomment it to any parent.

Go to your local library and check out the Feingold Diet for Hyperactive Children, it works!! My six year old son is ADHD, and I put him on this diet, and it is wonderful!! You cant tell he is the same rambunctious child. It seems like it would cost a fortune to do, but if you look at your labels on products, try to get what is pure and all natural, you will be suprised to see that most of it can be bought at reasonable prices. But, you must follow the diet as he says. You will love it, and your child will love the food. It doesnt make them non meat eaters, but elimanates the preservatives.
