Hi! I'm new to this forum. My son is 9 years old and has been diagnosed with ADHD since age 4. He has been taking Strattera since then. He has a sleep disorder so the other stimulate medications are out of the question. He is also on Risperdal. This helps him with any side effects he may have with Strattera. But lately we've noticed a change. He does great as school and he goes to a magnet school and is in the gifted classes. But when he gets home, he seems to have trouble. He is hyper, a little smart mouthed and seems to just be kind of beside himself. My biggest concern is that he is so competive. He is smaller than most of his peers and struggles with doing the same things they do. He has a cousin that is a year older than him and is much bigger and stronger than he is. If they are playing football, a board game, skating, etc. and my son can't keep up with his cousin or his peers he has a melt down. He cries and just gives up and says he will never be able to do it or he will never be good at it. I wrote it off as being a poor loser for a while and tried to explain to him that he can't win every time. But it is heartbreaking to see him want something so bad and can't physically do it and want to give up. If he makes a B in class, then he is "stupid and doesn't deserve to be in a gifted class", if his favorite football team loses a game, he goes to pieces. If he doesn't make a tackle in his football game, then he is "the worst player on his team and makes his team lose". Is this part of ADHD, side effects from Strattera, etc. Just don't know what's going on!!
Thanks for any input! ↓
