My son has several of the common/typical nervous habits, however.... the one I detest the most is his "picking his butt". He constantly picks his left cheek, as if his underwear is in his tail. This has been going on for a year now. After we started meds, it went away, but now it's back with a vengance. It's not just a quick wedgie pull - it's a long 5 min. ordeal and the other kids are noticing now. He is now six and other children his age are noticing he does this ALL THE TIME. Anyone else's child have this habit? Advice on how to get him to stop? I can live with the other nervous habits, but this one has to go!?!

HELP :)

have you had him checked for pinworms?

keep in mind if your constantly on him about it it makes him think of it all the more, spo the more he thinks of not doing it the he dose it. so try giving him something or ask him to get you a soda out of the fridge to try and get his mind off it. keep his hands busy when you catch him doing it. have you mentioned it to the doctors? just trying to be helpful good luck.

My daughter is almost 6 too, and has been on Concerta sinc Sept 06. She started picking at her privates as well, but in the front. she does it without thinking. i brought her to her pediatrician, and had her tested for infections, nothing was wrong with her and he said it's nothing to be concerned about and it'll go away. i still don't want her doing it, especially in school, kids are mean and will tease her. So, we started a code word system, where i say "apple tree" and she stops. that way, no one else knows what we are talking about.
she did have a tic for awhile (obsessive blinking) and her doc said it was from anxiety but when my husband up and left us last month, it went away in a day. he bullied her sometimes and had a temper, and made her very nervous. so sometimes it is external influences, and they display their nervousness in wierd ways, and sometimes it is due to meds or just anxiety. hope this helps, and if you have any advice, please let me know. school is starting soon and i'd like to have this in check by then!

momofthree: thanks for your reply! The code word sounds like a terrific idea! I usually give him the evil eye so that he knows I see what he is doing. My younger son goes in for his check up next week, so I was just going to mention it then and see if they wanted me to bring him in for a check on pinworms, just to rule it out, or any other infections/problems. He too does this without even thinking about it. However, since I have been noticing it so much in the past few weeks and have been bringing it to his attention and asking him why he does it, he is becoming more aware of his habit. My son also picks his nose, picks his skin until it bleeds, and picks at his fingernails all the time. Again, I know these are typical ADHD habits, so I understand his doing them. Thanks again for your idea and good luck to you as well! :)
