I need help. My almost 9 yo son has ADHD, and possibly MILD Aspergers. He takes 10mg Dexedrine on school mornings at 7 a.m. No other meds for ADHD, but does take Zyrtec every night for chronic hives.
Since he started meds in Sept, he is unable to go to sleep at night. As I am typing at 12:20 a.m., he is still awake - been in bed since 8:30. Seems he cannot "turn off" his brain at night.
Doctor assures me that the meds only last 4 - 6 hours in the system, but I do not have these same problems on the weekends (although he usually can't fall asleep until 10:30 then too).
I have tried keeping him up later, putting him down earlier, giving him benedryl, a lot of excercise during day, a lot of down time during day etc. I am hopeless and desperate at this point.
On the days I don't give him meds for school, he is usually so behind that he might bring home 3 extra hours of "make up" work.
I am hoping that some of you more experienced people can help me because I can't take one more night of this!
Thank you.
