Does anyone ever take their child off their meds in the summer? I've tried it the last 4 days, and have noticed marked hyper activity. Today i finally gave him one of his pills, 20mg SR, and was saddened at how quickly he became subdued. Can't decide which I'd rather see :( Any advice?

well i have a 16 year old daughter with adhd and she is taking 20 rit in the morning and 20 at lunch and i can safely say she does change.
i like the effect it has on her she can relax and be calm and we can actully talk it makes it so much better for me!
we do have our times when she says no but with out i feel i cant deal with her she gets hyper and likes to dance and sing and i like peace and quiet when i am at home all day!
me and my husband have 2 other children and they are amazing i admit there not perfect but there so much more easier to deal with so i will defo be keeping her on it this summer!

My partner, his ex and myself do not give my stepson meds during summer. he is on Concerta XL 36mg daily. we were reluctant at first to put him on meds and tried every other available option to control his condition to no avail. the last resort was to start concerta as a means of controlling his behaviour during school. he does not take it at weekends, bank holidays, during summer etc. of course we see a marked increase in symptoms, as you have done and this is completely normal. at the end of the day it is down to the parent to decide whether to medicate their child when they are not at school. it is completely your own decision and what it boils down to is weighing up the pros and cons of not medicating your son during the summer. every adhd child is different. personally, my stepson seems to be less subdued when not medicated, but his symptoms are controllable by his parenting team without them, and that is not always true in every case. our reason for starting the meds in the first place was to ensure he could concentrate in school and allow him to get a good education , and this was the only reason.
as i have mentioned before it helps to weigh up the pros and cons of the situation but ultimately it is your decision.
i hope you have found my advice helpful and hope that your summer is a good one
