I have a recently diagnosed four year old girl with adhd. The doctor has perscribed her ritalin. i gave it to her for the first time and i must admit that yes it does work but only seems to for about 3 to 4 hours and also she seems a bit restless and irritated after it wore off is that common starting out with it? Or possibly if anyone could tell me what happened if their child took it... i need all the helpful advise i can get at this point. I also have been reading on it and a lot of sites say it is not recomended for children under six and i would just like some input from a parent who may have a child under six also, see what kind of effects it had on him or her. Someone please help!!! Any input is appriciated!!!

Hi my daughter is nearly 10 and was diagnosed adhd last year. She is on ritalin la and ritalin 10. it takes a few months for it took take effect properly. the ritalin 10 only last a few hours where the ritalin la is a long lasting one that is 20mg. it took about 6 montha ogf messing with the dosages and the medication. we are now taking 1 ritalin la in the morning before school and half a ritalin 10 in the afternoon after school.

Short-acting Ritalin only lasts 3-4 hours so that would be normal. They often seem restless as thy come off, and hungry as it suppresses appetite while working. Use the medicated time to go places/ do things then get home, grin and bear the let down stage then be active and more understanding in the afternoon. Longer acting products tend to make your child not sleep at night so talk with your doctor about benefits and hassles of using LA form. Good luck, hang in there.

Hi..
my daughter is now 9. ADHD since 5. At first she was on Focalin XR. a time released med.
My daughter is Type 1 diabetic and it made her not want to eat so she was switched to Ritalin. It did work..however..we delt with severe mood swings and a basket case of a child. I took her off and since then we are just trying to deal with the ADHD without meds.
I really think thats my daughter does need meds but Im weary of trying new ones.

Everyday is a struggle...I can tell her until im blue in the face and 30seconds later her mind is on something totally different...

Impulsive..outspoken...not focused...

I dont recomend Ritalin..Im also a pharmacy technichian...Ritalin is not very common these days.

I think a long acting med is best so the kids dont have the ups ands downs...i just cant use them due to the diabetes.

They are brain washing it kid how do u determine if a kid is ADHD if you notice n start talking to people they' the schools normally have sometime to do with it I have talked to a couple of people n they. Said they were referred by the the school.... There not doctors they jus need to do there job and let the so called doctors do there's.. And the percentage and stats on it

My son who is also 4 was diagnosised with adhd and was put on ritalin but a pill to help him sleep at night. He had the same problem and ritalin will from what the doctor said make a child restless and possibly even cause an adverse affect. So when my son started showing what your daughter is showing they decreased his dose but he still wasnt sleeping. So they took him off and now he doesn't take anything again and it still more than a handful. But a child that isn't getting very much sleep and has adhd will be worse. They need naps and to go to bed early. And if your daughter is anything like my son, it is a struggle to get any of this to happen.

Please Help!!!
I tried naturally things for 3 months for the ADD. We accompanied this with a strict no whilte flour no white sugar diet. DD was good with the diet. The only thing I can say is that her mood was more stable. They saw nothing at school. So finally we decided to give Ritalin a chance...... Major mood altering after the first wee!!!!!! Does it get better....... what should I do. They are not seeing at school what we are seeing at home. Please advise parents who can help. I am totally at whits end and confused. She got her first 94 on a test... but is it worth it?????? I don't know what to do!

a reply to dylan and to explain briefly what meds do. i am a parent of a 7yr old son with adhd, asd, tics and sensory deficit disorder, i am not a doctor but i do study what adhd meds do in the brain. dylan you are right in a sense that meds are similar to cocaine but only in the sense that they release the same neuro-transmitters to the required parts of the brain. in the adhd brain the chemicals cannot access the front part of the brain that controls all of the things that cause them to act the way they do. effectively that part of the brain does not engage when needed which is the area that stops us being primitive beasts to be frank. my son is not on meds yet as his tics are so bad, his behaviour is well managed at home and is only required for school. but if u look at meds in a sense of they are medication for a chemical imbalance in the brain then why should they not feel some sort of release from it, especially at school that is 10 times harder for them, and yes they will have come downs, but u may be interested to know that if adults with adhd take cocaine they do not get high yet get a very bad come down, it only gives "normal", to everyone else, levels of neuro-transmitters. i have a brother who wasnt diagnosed with adhd until he was 30 and until then had a massive drug problem with cocaine, he has been on meds for 3 yrs now and hasnt touched it since. he says it is the best thing that happened for him and if he had to stop taking his meds he would rather die than live like that. they allow him to think! i am not endorsing meds to anyone i am just giving u some info that docs dont tell u but i do know as any of you do how hard the decision is to make and that you really are the one to carry the burden, what if you make the wrong decision is the hardest thing! i would say u have started so just give it a fair go, you have managed difficult behaviours before and will be used to the evolution of all the symptoms and maybe this is just another one. good luck and as trish says hang in there x

hi my name is paula my son was on ritalin for years since age 6 till he was 18 and made a choice to stop the drug only has a affect for about 4 hours and side affects are very small i only alowed him to take it during school hours and watched the side affects when he came home he was just back to hemself something ony i could handle it is not a additive drug and it does work but you have to know your child to know how much and when they can take it its not something u use for the sake of peace or family your child is who she is and you need to allow her to be who she is i didnt like the quite nice and helpfull person he became on this drug thats why i only gave it to him for school adhd is a big part of him and he is so loved not just by his family but by everyone that knows him your little girl is only a baby to young for any drugs let her be herself and encourige her bad ways by asking her to help you to break old things that you dont need even if it means bying stuff secondhand give her the job of takibg it apart or if she wants to fix something let her she is much smater than u think ritalin has a 4 hour affect and not when she is 4 but when she is in scholl she might need it dont let any doctor tell you how your child should be they at the end of the day go home you are the one with the child and belive me he us loved by friends family and even people i dont know just for been himself

Stop with the Ritalin now. Take away all High Fructose corn Syrup and check for food allergies. Hyperactivity is almost always a result of one of these. The medications cause brain damage heart problems and in the end they don't help with behavior. the agitation she is feeling when the pills wear off will only get worse as time goes by and eventually she will be taking huge doses all the time. My boy is now eight and will be getting a pacemaker installed in a week. My 9 year old was taking 3 different medications and now has a goiter. I only wish i had know 5 years ago.
