This is my first time to this site making a reply, but I can feel you through your words. My son is 71/2 now. He takes 3mg of chewable meletonin every night. If I forget he's up till midnight. Sometimes he can take it and still be up till midnight. It is so exhausting. My son was diagnosed when he was 4 with ADHD, ODD, and mood disorder.

My daughter just started on Melatonin two weeks ago. It is WONDERFUL!!!! My daughter is about 34 lbs and takes 1/2 of a 3mg tablet each night. She has been sleeping by 8 or 8:30 for the first time since she was 2. I did research on the internet and there are no proven studies of melatonin in children that I have found. The only thing I was told was to make sure it is straight melatonin and not mixed with something else and to use Synthetic melatonin instead of natural. Natural melatonin apparently is made from melatonin of animals and can cause viruses.

My son is 11 years old (about 85#). He takes 2 - 1 mg pills when he has difficulty sleeping. It really works.I only give it to him when he has had a ver active day. Sometimes I give him s"snooze fodds" be fore he goes to bed-- like peanuts, peanutbutter sandwich or oatmeal cookies. There is a list somewhere online.

Does any one experience crazy dreams while on it?

My son is 4 and the doctor said he can have 6 mg of melatonin of a night. However the melatonin doesn't help him stay asleep only helps him get to sleep. He still wakes up at around 1 or 2 am and we then have to give him benadryl.

My pediatrician told me that it's anywhere between 3-5mg. My kids each take a dissolvable 5mg but they do make 1 mg pills as well. As my doctor told me, start at 1mg and adjust up to 5mg depending on what works. My kids are 8 and 10 so their needs may be a bit more.
Also, something I found really helped my 10 year old (who is ADHD/OCD) is a noise machine. Both my girls seem to sleep better now that we have that. The one I have is from WalMart and cost around $20. It has 5 different sounds so she could find the one that soothed her the most. Best money ever spent.
