I have a 5 yr old who refuses to swallow her medicine. Has been this way since July of last year. I finally have tried my last opition and mix it in a milkshake the first 2 wks were great she drank it every morning. Now she is refusing to drink it and will throw it up if she even takes a swallow (NOTE she does not know the medicine is in the milkshake) I have even tried giving it to her in food but she found the pill and would not swallow it. I would love to have some help on ways she will take this.
Also the school she attends does not help they have been very upset with her and myself, I am researching on homeschooling her rather than having to get a phone call from the school every day sometimes more.

Our Dr. suggested practicing swallowing with nerds candies first. And my son did well and was swallowing his pills quite quickly after that. I have been homeschooling him for four years and I'm so glad I am. School is so hard for kids with ADD. At home they can work at their own pace and they have such a better self-esteem as they are not being compared with other kids. Some of these kids just need that extra attention to succeed.

my daughter started the meds at 10 but had never swallowed a pill. The psychologist told me to let her use anything she wanted to take it. She actually had ice cream or whipped cream for breakfast for about 3 months. It was still a struggle sometimes and our weekly session with the psychologist were most helpful. I stopped the power struggle and it became her responsibility to recognized her behavior with and without the meds. Although you probably can't see it now, you are lucky that she was diagnosed so early. It will get easier.

Thank you for the replies. We are in the process of finding another dr, due to the one we have told us to disipline her. I can not do that. I don't want her thinking it is a bad thing to take or punishment. I am going to let her finish this school yr and see what occurs from there. I strongly would rather teach her at home, she seems to respond better when it is one on one. We are still trying different ways to have her take the medicine. And will keep trying.
