I have a question about gaining custody of my niece. It's my husbands sisters (my sister in-law) daughter who has been apprehended by FACS at birth due to her drug addiction. The FACS are wanting Crown Wardship and want to place her for adoption because there was no "family" option, at least that they were aware of. My niece is now only 2 weeks old, HOWEVER, we live in British Columbia, and my niece is in Ontario. I want to know how this is going to work? I have no children of my own, so we would obviously raise her as our own. My sister in-law wants us to be the guardian and have full custody, however she has no say anymore because she is in the States Custody.
I've never done anything like this so I'm a little unsure of which avenue to take? How long things take to get moving? Because we are family, I understand FACS prefers placing the child in family care, so this could be a plus for us. Not to mention the mother of the child wants us to be the guardians and we live far enough away that it will make it very difficult for my sister in-law to have contact, which is what they want.... little to know contact with the kids until she is normal and stable and healthy.
So if it's agreed that we want the baby, and she wants us to have the baby, are there going to be court dates and things even though the decision is mutual? Will I have to travel back and forth to work this all out? Also will I be able to go alone, or will my significant other have to be with me when we go to get our niece?
I really want her and I'll do anything to get her, I just really would like some advice, tips, help etc. on wha I need to do.
I've contacted the social worker who is involved on this case back in Ontario yesterday and today and keep getting a voice message and no response to my voice mail yet. How can I get this moving faster?! Please help!!!!
Thanks you ↓
