Hello. My oldest son is 22 months. He has already been determined to have a speech delay, and sees a speech therapist along with an OT. I did the M-CHAT for him, and his score was 7. He already has an appointment with a developmental pediatrician next month where they will do a full hour diagnostic evaluation on him.

I suspect he may be autistic because i grew up around my first cousin (who has aspergers syndrome, and a few other disorders), saw his behaviors, and my son exhibits many of the same symptoms. For example:

He makes unusual gestures towards his face
He has violent, uncontrollable behaviors at the slightest thing
If he deviates from his routine, he freaks out
He is unreasonably violent towards us, and our younger son
He slaps the sides of his head when at rest as well as during a behavior
He bangs his head against things
He bites/hits/pinches/scratches
He makes fast, and strange finger movements when excited
When he can't handle a situation, or is told "no", he throws himself on the floor, and begins to harm himself (i.e. biting himself, pulling his own hair, and scratching himself.)
And many other things.

Is this what your children do? Does it sound like my son may be on the spectrum? We brought our concerns up to his old ped. but he just brushed it off as toddler tantrums. I've seen toddler tantrums, and this is excessive. His speech therapist, and OT told us that he should be evaluated for ASD, SPD, and possible some sort of emotional disorder (we lived with my fiance's mother for a few months, and she was very mentally, verbally, and emotionally abusive, so we left). There is a heavy history of developmental issues, delays, and mental illnesses in both sides of our family, which only furthers our concerns. Any help, or advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you :)

Hello, my son is two and a half years old. He has just been diagnosed with autism.....I'm sorry to say but all the signs you have given above are all of what my son Zachary has. There are also many other signs he might have.......my son will not make eye contact with people that does not know and some people that he does even know. Is attached to one or two particular toys........doesn't interact with other adults or children.....prefers not to be touched, or cuddled.
I have only recently been told that my son had autism and can't really say it has even sunk in yet. As a mum you know when something isnt right.....i was also brushed off with temper tantrums in the beginning. I wish u the best of luck. Love hollie and Zachary x x x

Hi,

I would suggest that you contact "Child Development Watch" types of local organizations within your city and state. They have special arrangements through which you can get early appointments from a group of neuologists, psychologits and other experts in the area to get your son evaluated. I wish it comes out negative and turns out that it is a temporary problem that can be solved. But symptoms seems very typical. However, I am not an expert so please see someone, expert as soon as possible. Earlier you find the problem and start working on the potential treatments, better you will be.

I am still trying to find what went wrong with my son. He doesn't have sleeping, eating, routine or tantrum related issues so far but is still diagnosed with ASD because of his lack of speech, eye contact, body control and social behavior. From what I have heard, symptoms come and go, and evolve over the period of time. So the key is if you see any sign just put your 100% to give your son what will help him the most. I am still stuggling to find what is the best for my kiddo....
