My 8 yr. old son with autism & ADHD is started his count down before school starts, to prepare himself for the change from home to school. We do our best to get him ready for the change like take him to the school playgroung, meet his teacher if we can, see his classroom, etc. Does anyone have any more ideas that might work, it seems to be getting worse for him the older he gets. My e-mail is [email protected]

HI i am just starting to notice some concerning traits in my 2 year old son and am noticing they alot like the symptoms of autism i have read about. the only word he says is mum. he sits on the floor rocking back and forth just staring at the floor he sits and laughs to himself like he is in a world of his own then he will get up and walk in a circle before sitting back in his place and straing again. most of his communication with me is screams or grunts and he hates to sit and cuddle with me or kisses and it is very hard to get his attention sometimes at first i thought he was deaf or had selective hearing and just didnt want to listen to me he dosent seem to make direct eye contact with anyone and even standing infront of him saying his name i just cant grab his attention. he is very active and hardly eats a thing not for a lack of food but he just dosent seem to want to eat alot . it is just worrying me because about 5 months ago he just wasnt like this now it seems like he is always in a world of his own. does thsi sound familiar to anyone should i have him checked??

I'm 17 years old & I've got High- Fuctioning Autism. I want to know more about Autism, how to help my 15 year old non Autistic sister cope, & how I can be a better OLDER sister, INSTEAD of the PERSONALITY, ATITUDE, & EMOTIONS of a younger SISTER.

To huntergrunter,
hello, i read your entry and you should get your son checked- you have described text-book Autism in the symptoms you say your son is displaying but don't be discouraged, though any disability is a challenge not only to the child and the parents, it is without a doubt a blessing in disguise as hard to understand as it may sound at this point. Special people are sent extra-special children.

My six year old son was recently diagnosed with Autism. I had suspected it all his life (constant rocking, head banging on the pillow, didn't turn his head towards my voice as an infant) but his doctor told me he will outgrow it (the rocking). He started Kindergarten last year and that's when the problems began. He got into fights with other children, threw crayons etc. Most of the time it was because he was frustrated or his feelings got hurt. Now I am dealing with him constantly repeating the same sentences and throwing tantrums when he doesn't get something he wants or he has a little dirt spot on his new shoes. He is in Transitional 1 now and I noticed that he can memorize and identify his numbers but not the letters (unless they are in his name). I am so frustrated because I don't know how to help him and it seems that people don't take it seriously because he is highly functional. I finally called the school yesterday to have them run some tests so that he can get the help he needs. I was reluctant because I don't want him to be "labelled" or sent off to some school that has kids with major behavioral problems. I do understand he has behavioral problems but firmly believe he is capable of functioning in the regular school system. The principal told me he was surprised since he had seen my son and he does not seem autistic to him. Well, he doesn't see the temper tantrums, rocking and constant repetition. My son's lastest obsession is with bad words, sometimes he even makes up words to ask me if it is a bad word. I have an appointment with a counselor this afternoon and we will go over a treatment plan. Which is great but I am a single mother with another 3rd grader (and there is homework every night) and I work full time. My biggest concern right now is how do I teach him the alphabet? I tried a, b, c last night and after thirty minutes, he couldn't even idenitify the b anymore. I am so frustrated and worried about his future.

This is in response to Huntergrunter. My son started to do the same thing at that age. Constant rocking, lack of eye contact and banged his head on the pillow at night until he fell asleep. He never had a problem with cuddling or interacting with his sister. I did have a hearing test done because he never turned his head towards me when he was an infant. I wish I could go back three years and get him the help he needs. You are the parent and you have an instinct about your child (just like I did). I would insist on having him evaluated.
