Hi i am a new member and seem to have lost my way through hundreds of self help sites.
My son is 4 years old. when i was pregnant a scan showed he had a thickness on the back of his neck which is associated with Downs Syndrome. We decided not to have a test to confirm and let fate decide, but at another follow up scan the thickness had dissapeared. We had no follow up checks or had any tests what so ever after birth.
I know i shouldnt compare children as all are different, but my daughter who is 7 now, was competly different as a baby. My son was a very slow learner at walking talking and other mile stones, but was able to put colors into groups before he was 1.
I have spoken to teachers regarding his learning and they are saying he is a slow learner but nothing for concern. they have said he shows no symptoms of Autism but they have not looked or observed for anything else. After looking online at Aspergers he does fit some of the "red flags" but not all of them. for instance:
he likes his routine, has to have "bed time socks" on before any other clothes or "morning socks" on before uniform. He doesnt like other people in his bedroom, he gets upset if i try a different breakfast other than his 2 yogurts, he cannot write his name/know any other letter than the first in his name - but can do a 100 piece jigsaw by his self. There are many more, too

Am i over reacting? Are these signs of Aspergers or Autism? i have tried talking to teachers but they refer me to health visitors who refer me to doctors who refer me back to school - they all seem to want to pass the buck.

Please help!!
Thanks

My autistic daughter is now 16.One of the things I have learned is to ALWAYS go with your mothering instincts! Please take your son to a specialist or Children's Hospital for an evaluation ASAP. Having a few symptoms is all you need. Most autistics don't have a symptom. Its better to make sure, if you are wrong well that would be wonderful news, but if you are right then your son needs to start therepy & treatment.Good luck

Oh and remember that teachers don't have MD behind their name.

I got a friends his son is just like your son. Her pregnant scan show he had thickness on the back of his neck. They scare he is down syndrome. But the second scan say he is fine. Her son is now 9 years old. He is in the mainstream school. He is struggle in English comprehension. He redo the year 3. The doctor doesn't say he is aspergers or autism. He is just slow learner. Sometimes we can see he behavior not properly. Sometimes he behaves OK. His mum do receive the call sometimes from school because he causes trouble. He is very good at Lego and puzzle.
His mum sometimes suspect he is autism. They do ST for him as well. Also his dad teach him all the time. Sometimes the dad hits him because he is learning too slow. His dad loves him very much. Most of his spare time spends on him.
He is not social when he is in kindergarten. He is better in year one. But sometimes still has a little different from the normal kid. Maybe he just delayed.

His mum have another son which is normal. Then his little sister is autism. All I know three of her children have high mercury.
