Hello lizzy,

I am a mother of an 18 year old with austim. I also have a brother in-law who also has austim. The best way to handle the melt downs in all honesty is let her fight it out scream at the point where she comes down go to her and hold explain she cant do that she understands, alot people will tell she doesnt but austim children do understand. As far as talking this is what My Dr. suggested who got his research through ca. research of austim he taught me when she wants something say the name and repeat it then either stop or take it way for a short time even if she throws herself down and has horriable fits, then slowly give it back to her evenutally work on taking away longer and longer until she repeats it and then give it back to her sooner or later she will repeat the words there was actually an excellent thing on tv with super nanny about a small boy who was 3 and find out he had austim it show the procedures i am talking about. also go to a specialist they can help big time, also you may want to try a herb for the meltdowns as well my brother in-law has been on them since he is little and it has work excellent for him, go to a natural food store and ask what would be a good herb for her. and keep researching get into contact with the austim network in your area it helps to have other families with children with austim to give advice.

I also have a 6 year old child with Autism. His name is Colton and he can't speak either. We have him in special school that uses the P.E.C.S. program. Learning to talk with pictures and he is doing much better. we have also incorporated this program into his speech theropy sessions. Maybe this could work for your child. I also have an older daughter 13 And she has mild autism she has been in theropy for 9 years and she is doing great. I do know it can be very overwhelming sometimes.

Lizzy,
I have a son who is almost five years old with Autism. I know what you are going through. It is the most challenging disability. I went through the same exact things with Kaleb. But let me tell you their is hope. It does get better as they get older, But the most important thing for children with autism is early intervention. Kaleb has been attending the northern Utah Autism program for 2 years now and is making tremendous progress he is now starting to develop speech and is doing awesome. One thing is you have to ingnore them, but make sure they do not hurt themselves and you need to say that is not ok to throw tantrums you need to let her know that it is not ok . Everthing that kaleb does something that is unacceptable or has a meltdown we put him in what we call a seat away we have a place where we put a special chair you sit them in the chair facing the wall. And anytime he is has a tantrum. I tell him that is not ok and walk him over to the chair tell that is not ok to do whatever he had done wrong . You might think they don't understand but really they do. They try to make you think they don't. But Kaleb has learned the word that is not ok, responds well. Seat away does not work for some people but does for most. It works well for Kaleb.

Never give up no matter what. Go to a speech therapist. Or get help through the resorce center for autism. They have one in Indiana. I had the same thing happen. I have a 23 yr.old that can't talk. I send him (and go with him) to a speech therapist.I put it in Gods hands.any questions please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

I have a 3 year old with the same issues. its always hard trying to work out what has caused the melt downs usually it is something that I have taken for granted but generally its things that are diiferent from his routine. this is probably not much help. I'm stil learning the rules!!

My son who was autisic as a little guy has improved greatly with allergy treatment and removal of toxins and love and prayer. At 18 now nobody would ever guess he ever had any problems. In fact he is more mature and articulate than most 18 yr olds. Never give up.

Hi lizzy. I have an almost five year old daughter with autism and she can talk, but it's really echoaliac. She repeats the same words over and over again. She has meltsowns too. If she doesn't get her way or anything changes watch out. I just try to get her attention with something else immediately. Chocolate is good too!
