I would like to know if any non-verbal children ever babbled? I have a 20month old son with PDD and I OCCASIONALLY hear him babble. His communication skills are very poor so I worry that he will never talk.

My 41/2 year old is very vocal, no words though. He'll repeat. He does babble and make other noises.

Jack's story....

After the 12 mos. vaccines my son gradually slipped into autism. He was head-banging, hand-flapping, twirling, lost speech, lost eye contact and he just withdrew.

Now two years later.... no head-banging, no twirling, no flapping, has eye contact and is starting to verbalize again. And... he has Down Syndrome to boot. :) Yes... even kids with DS get autism. Actually they get it at a higher rate.

What helped him? First I give God praise.... our son wouldn't be here without Him and we prayed and I believe He guided us. Second... supplements. Especially cod liver oil. I recommend Green Pastures CLO with the X factor. Check out Dr. Mary Megson's work on the web. http://www.diet-studies.com/megson.html Our Jack healed gradually... but he is healing. I actually had to make myself GET USED TO him not twirling everything any more!

Also check out Dr. Amy Yasko's work. www.holistichealth.com

We give Jack alot of supps - cod liver oil, probiotic, magnesium citrate, tart cherry and recently we added cilantro. He takes some other things too but each child is unique. It helps to find a good naturopathic MD or chiropractor. Don't use supps until you research things for yourself. Cilantro for example...should possibly not be used until some other detox has been done.

Don't give up. There is hope! And... I will be frank here.... many mainstream doctors know squat about how to heal autism. Don't let that throw you. There are people who do know how to help. God bless you! Love, Jack's Mom :) goodplans4you@yahoo.com

When my grandson was 20 months old he used to babble. He did it all the time. We also worried that he would never talk, because none of the babble was comprehensible to us. He is now nearly 5 yrs old and is quite good vocabulary, even though most of it is nouns. Turns out the babble contained a lot of words we just couldn't comprehend at the time due to poor speech. It really sounded like another language. We used a lot of photograph flash cards to get him to start saying words. He responded very well to those, especially animals.

My son and daughter are both non verbal at 4 and 3 years of age and they both make a lot of noise with their mouths. I think it is to soon to tell if your child will remain non verbal at 20 months old.

my son is 7. and he did not say a word until he was almost 5. then it was a word here or there. now he is 7, and his vocabulary is amazing! he still can not have a full conversation with someone, but he can communicate his needs. i fully believe, if we do not give up on our children, they will not give up on themselves.

Only 20 mos, you still have plenty of time, don't throw the hat in so soon , one of my children was 38 months before she spoke, shes not the best in communications but she can get her point across when needed. For us sign language helped ALOT! Do you have your son in speech or music therapy yet?

Our son has been diagnosed with low-functioning autism or "classic" autism, he's turning 3 in October and he is still non-verbal. They can't tell us if he'll ever speak but when he was a little younger he did babble, actually that's all he does now, babbles, moans, squeels etc. It's a good thing to hear him but also frustrating to know that he doesnt speak because he's not physically capable, it's all having to do with the autism. Pretty nice hearing something though!
