| Im so glad your getting the early intervention and you can see the boys improving. I live in the Western suburbs of Melbourne . Right now both my kids have finished early intervention and are atending an autism specific school. To be honestthere wasn't a lot out there for them. When my oldest was diagnosed he received 2 hours of group early intervention once a week. When my daughter had her daignois it was a lot less . Last year it got down to 1 hour of group intervention which was a waste of time as I had to take her out of kindergarden one day a week for this and so the last term we just said no this is a waste of time. We also got private speech pathology for the kids which is honestly the best thing you can do. Also private music therapy my son loved but my daughter mucked around. I even tried gymbaroo for her as she loves physical activity but she got very distressed when she had to sit on the mat and join in with everyone. She cant stand haveing a lot of people around her. I was fortunate enough to do the Hanen program through Early intervention which teaches you communication and interaction skills with your child. Ask your case worker at early intervention about it. I had to scrifice group therapy for her for 1 term to do this though as again the double dipping story. The only other service I highly recommend is contacting your local council for Specific HACC which is a respite service you are entitled to. A trained carer watches your children so you can have a break for a couple of hours. There can be a long waiting list for this one. Also something that has just come up recently, ring up centrelink and ask about the $10,000 payment John Howard promised the other week on the radio to parents on the Carers Allowance whose children have a severe disabillity. This is something not very many people know about and so I have been spreading the word. This could mean you can pay for much needed therapy or equipment for your kids. The only other thing I did for my kids was put them on a casein(dairy) and gluten free diet. Especially taking dairy out of the diet has really reduced the hyperactivity and behavior problems a lot. They go crazy again when they get any food containing milk. This is very hard to stick to though. Liz ↑ |
