Hi Joan........ My 3 year old has autism and has MAJOR sensory integration issues. He now sleeps under a massive dog pillow with plasma lights, a disco ball and a sound machine. It took us a very long time to find out what works for him......and they are all so different! I would LOVE to chat with you on a more personal basis if you would like. [email protected]. Take care and good luck! Cindy

Can children with autism have problems with sleeping? I have a 3yr old boy and he wakes up at 2, 3, 4 AM wanting to get up out of bed.

Yes, alot of autistic kids have issues with sleeping. When my son was little, he woke up quite often. We eventually found out that his EEG showed irregularities at night and he was on a seizure medication for a while. He is off now. To make sure he can get to sleep and sleep through the night, we give him Melatonin before bedtime.

HI Joan,

I have the same challenge-my son has been diagnosed with Aspergers and ADHD.

He is also on Meletonin its great to get him asleep but doesnt keep him that way for more than 3 hours at a time-our doctors have suggested alternative medication so we are going to try it-I will let you all know if it works....at this satge my Husband and I are desperate for a good nights sleep-its been 5 years already.......but we hold in there as I know my little chrub cant do anything about it either :-)

My 2 1/2 year old has had sleeping problems since birth. The first night he slept 5 hours straight he was over the age of 1, and I woke up thinking he must be dead.

When I get toally desprate I cut off the monter and let him cry out the night ( 45 minutes to an hour) unless he is histraical. I have to add the only thing in his roon is a bed, no pillow and a blanket, and a night light. He usually sleeps good for a few nights after that as well. I am not sure if this is hurting him in anyway, but I feel it is so important you take care of your needs as well as his or you will not be able to care for him correctly.

Hi , I also have a daughter with ASD , she is 2 and 3 mths old , previously we have an issue with her waking up at 4 am in the morning and wanted to get up and play. We will normally let her and she will sleep again at around 7 am and wake up only at 9 am. I have started giving her Nordic Naturals Cod Liver Oil and my daughter now do not wake up @ wee hours anymore,Praise God! , and regularly wakes up @ 8 am in time for her play group. And yes, I also enrolled her in a normal playgroup class for her to be at ease with other children though she do not directly interact with them for now but she is learning to tolerate their presence. Keep trying Joan.. We can get through this journey .. God Bless!

Hi, My son had a problem sleeping. I decided to do something about it. I created a all natural massage oil. It sold so well at my moms group. It doesn't put the child to sleep, it lets them rest. In the morning, he wakes rested. and laughing. Our daughter likes it too. While I massage him, it relaxes me. I sell it for a very low price. I know the cost of a special needs child. http://zion-illinois.olx.com

My 4 yr old has recently been diagnosed with PDD NOS and he too has a lot of trouble getting to sleep at night. His specialist has recomended Melatonin but we're not comfortable giving our son this medication as we consider this something for adults, not children. For those of you who have given your child Melatonin, are there any side effects?

Hi. I work in a school district, as a special-education paraprofessional. I have been blessed to care for and help many different children of various ages, with a variety of challenges. I recently listened to / watched a woman share her incredible story of raising a son with autism. It touched me deeply. Her son was healed, a few years back, and continues to improve in his schooling. I ordered her book and found so much hope in her experience. Hope that applies to everyone, including families with autism but not limited to only autism. My heart goes out to all. If anyone is interested in the details of the book and the radio / t.v. program, please e-mail me at [email protected]. (Since it is my understanding that some things cannot be posted.) With excitement, encouragement, and heart-felt appreciation and compassion to every family touched by especially autism...There IS Hope.

I have a daughter that is 11 and she is also having a lot of trouble sleeping. She will fall asleep around 9 or 10 at night and she will wake up around 2 or 3 in the morning, wantint to run around the house and go into my other childrens room to turn on lights and the TV and does not let them go to sleep either I am going through a very difficult time with her. She gets very frusturated and hits herself and screams a lot.
