I am 5 months pregnant and I'm wondering what the best ways to prepare for breastfeeding have been for you all?

I've read to expose the nipples to air as much as possible, and allow basic friction against clothes and washclothes. Anything else?

I've read stuff for and against applying Vitamin E.

I use vitamin E oil to help prevent stretch marks. It helps soften the skin so it can stretch. I didn't get one stretch mark with my first child.

I apply Lansolin cream on my breast. It's safe to apply when the baby is breastfeeding also. I never heard about the air and friction. friction causes me to leak and I'm just 6 months pregnant. Basically you don't want your breasts all chafted.

With my first child my breasts were really tender after giving birth so it hurt like hell. I got a stress ball and squeezed it while nursing. I don't mean to scare you by saying that. I gave myself a 3 week limit. Your body doesn't know how much milk to produce in the begining so your breasts will get really full quickly in the begining causing them to become tender. Empty them as much as possible by nursing. I froze a head of cabbage and took off leaves to place on my breasts if they got too sore. Also massage your breast so your milk ducts don't get clogged. But most of all keep applying the Lansolin cream. You don't want cracked nipples.

Do not use vitamin E on your nipples. It can be toxic to the baby.

Lanolin is the best.

Personally I did not do anything to 'prep' for the baby, and we were always fine. But admittedly I was nervous the first time around. Many hospitals and clinics offer the services of a lactation consultant for free. She may have some good advice for you.

Good luck and congratulations!
