I have heard that you can still get pregnant while breastfeeding. I'm curious what the percentages are of that and if it is very likely? I do not have periods while I am nursing.

Yes you can get pregnant while breastfeeding. Keep in mind that you ovulate once before you get your period. Some women like me got their period even while breastfeeding.

Yes I have my periods while breastfeeding and it seems that I may be pregnant again, my son is only 14 weeks old!!!!!!!!! I was also on Micrnor which is a birth control that you can take while breastfeeding so it is very possible.

YES!! My son is 9 months and I'm still nursing him atleast twice a day. I have only had my period ONCE, very lightly, for 2 days.I just found out that I'm pregnant, again, so yes, it can happen so plan accordingly.

Hello Rachel,

Please forgive me, I am going to copy and paste a reply I posted to another forum member's similar question. I hope you find the information helpful.

Although it is possible that you can become pregnant at this time, it is statistically unlikely if you are breastfeeding. I do not have the exact percentages however, so I cannot share them with you.

Breastfeeding releases certain hormones that will delay ovulation. Most women will not get their periods for many months, even over a year, depending on how strong they breastfeed. And often times the first period arrives without ovulation. This is called "anovulation".

Yet on the other hand I know of a breastfeeding woman who did get pregnant 1 month after her child was born. But that is extremely unusual. I only state that to make sure you do not depend solely on breastfeeding to delay ovulation, unless you are willing to take the slight risk of pregnancy.

I recommend that you check into a natural form of family planning at this time, like the Creighton Method or Billings Method, to help you in understanding where your body's fertility is at. By daily mucous checks, you are able to identify the signs of fertility, and know when intercourse can result in pregnancy.

Breastfeeding is a wonderful thing, but it limits our choices in artificial birth control. However natural family planning methods like Creighton or Billings (not to be mistaken with the old outdated "Rhythm method" which is not effective), does not interfere with our breastfeeding our babies. And when done right, have a 99.5% effectiveness rate in prevention of pregnancy, if that is what one desires. This effectiveness rate is equal to the effectiveness of the Pill.

On the flip side, one can also use the same method with a high success rate of becoming pregnant if that is what one desires.

So you see, in understanding your fertility with these methods of family planning, you are truly in complete control.

The following website will give you more information on the Creighton method if you wish to read more about this option. It is not my site, but I like how the information is easy to understand. http://www.reedsrx.com/women/nfp.htm

If you decide you would like to speak to someone about this method, this website will direct you to someone in your area. http://www.fertilitycare.org/

I wish you well in your family planning choices.
