I was not aware of this, and maybe I'm just stupid. I just found out that getting pregnant while breastfeeding can affect your production of milk. Because of the hormones, your production can go way down or diminish all together, or your baby might just not want to feed from you cause the taste can change when you're pregnant. When my baby was 5 months (she's now 7 months) old, I just stopped producing for some reason we didn't know why. Then I was waiting for my period to come back after we started giving her formula, and it never did come back so I took a preg. test and it was positive. I just recently had a US done and am already 3 months pregnant, so when i was breastfeeding her i got pregnant and started to loose my supply. I just got back from the doc and she said that it's all starting to make sense now. So, apparently, that can happen. Obviously everyone is different, but I least they could have said something in the beginning that it's a possibility. Did anyone else know this??????

yes every woman is different and many become fertile agian before their peroid comes back. that is why they tell you that breastfeeding isn't a reliable type of birth control by itself. too bad you didn't know that you were preg. before your baby self-weaned. there are many things that you can do to get your milk supply back up, even when preg. well congrats on the new baby and just remember that any breastmilk that your baby got helps. so don't feel bad about having to stop.

melissa,
I tried everything in the book to get my milk supply back and nothing worked, it was odd. anyways, we are extremely excited to be having another one and this time I will NOT get pregnant and hopefully the breastfeeding will be more successful! thanks for your reply

yes...I went through the same thing. we lasted almost a year...she just lost interest and not to mention she and I both were kind of uncomfortable trying to bf...your stomache tends to get in the way. :-) but we made it and noe the new one is three weeks and she's a year so she's on to milk and all the other good things ya know. I will mention though that since going through the engorgement phase right now the when i pump to release some of the supply I just give it to her in a bottle which she gets sonce a day so that helps out too. I tried letting her nurse but it was a little akward for both of us and rather draining for me....good luck!
