I am a 1st time mother to a 1 month old 10 1/2lb baby boy. He screams to eat and the minute I put the bottle in his mouth he is out like a light! I try everything, changing his diaper, poking at him, walking around. On a normal day he eats 4 1/2 to 5 ounces and with formula you have an hour that he needs to consume it and I am wasting formula, which isn't cheap!!! He just started doing this and I need advice on what I should do.

Because its the closest thing to feeding that they have on here thank you.......and I guess regardless if its a bottle or boob, its eating and I am sure that some mothers that are breastfeeding have the same problem.

Claire, I am no longer breastfeeding, but I pop in to see if I can help anyone. I would suggest calling your doctor and explaining what your baby is doing. It might be a sympton of something else. I would call your doc and see what they say. Good Luck!!! And I am sure that other mom's have had this prob;em to. The stay at home mom forum is awesome with alot of awesome people on it.

my little one did this when I was breastfeeding, they suggested tickling her chin which didnt help! I never found out what helped but I just wanted to let you know that you are not the only one with this problem :)

My baby is 7 1/2 weeks old and 15 pounds! You'd be surprized that I had the same problem too! And nothing I did either would keep her awake, I breastfeed though but same concept. She just would fall asleep at the boob and she still does at times. I would still tell your doctor, but I'd think as long as he's not losing weight you're doing okay.- I do have a question, do you mean 4 to 5 ounces a day! That doesn't sound like much,

When my babies were in NICU they used to try to fall asleep durring feedings. The nurses shared a few secrets with me. I hope they help you (or somebody) a little. Sometimes it helps if you hold ome of his tiny hands while you feed him. If he looks like he is thinking about falling asleep you start to move his arm around like arm circles. This helped to keep them awake a little longer. The other thing that I was told to do was to nudge their chin upwards. When they would start to doze off I would nudge baby's little chin and kind of make him chomp down on the nipple so more would spray into his mouth. He would remember that he was eating and go back to sucking on the bottle.

Another thing that you might try is feeding him as soon as he wakes up. I had a nurse tell me that I should follow the acronym EASY. Eat, Activity, Sleep, You. She said that as soon as baby wakes up you should feed him, then play with him, then put him back to sleep and take some time for yourself. and when he wakes up start the whole cycle again. This didn't really work for my kids as they seemed to have a different idea about how things should be done.

Good Luck!

Hey I totally agree with that! EAT, ACTIVITY, SLEEP AND YOU. That's kinda what I do with my little one who's 12 weeks old. Not on purpose, it's just kinda the routine that happened. Although our routine is more like........ eat, sleep, you, activity........

i have a 8 day old baby girl and well she does the same thing, when i breastfeed her she falls asleep within minutes of feeding and tickling her chin or poking her or whatever doesn't seem to work. I read when they start to fall asleep on one breast to switch them to the other side and it should help. I tried that and it works for a bit but not long. she does the same thing with the bottle.

Give him a pacifier. He may be needing something to suck on just for some comfort!

try taking your babies clothes off. Take a cool wash rag and put it on the bottom of your babies feet. And on the back of the neck. It will help to waken your baby up
