hey guys. just wondering. on march 9th i had a c section and had a 7pound 10 0z baby girl. well i was told that my baby should be back up to her birthweight by day 14, and she only weighed in at 7 pounds 1 0z. she eats every 2 to 3 hours but rarely stays on for very long. she has plenty of wet and dirty diapers everyday, and is very content, so why isnt she back to her birthweight. any help would be greatly appreciated. should i be worried? ↓

| my baby did not get back to her birth weight either in 2 weeks. and the doc says she is fine. she was born 6 10 and went down to 6lb 1 oz . in just 1 day, she had jaundice and was bottle fed to get her liver functioning properley. she is still small, and does not gain weight fast and she is 7 mo old. at 15 lbs!!! i think boob fed babies have a healthier weight than bottle fed babies. at least that is what i have observed from talking to other moms. hand in there, feed her as often as she wants and dont worry about it until the doc says to!! ↑ |
| If she's happy and feeding well then don't worry. Formula fed babies pile on the weight and breastfeeding mums worry that their babies don't do this, but it's not really healthy to gain weight so quickly. ↑ |
Tara,
It sounds like your Little One is eating appropriately enough. Every 2 to 3 hours is a very good nursing schedule. Remember her tummy is about the size of her fist, and that breastmilk being the perfect food for her is digested much quicker then formula.
Fiona is correct about formula babies putting on the weight quicker, but this is not necessarily a good thing as studies have shown that formula fed babies are more prone for obesity in childhood then breastfed babies.
Appropriate weight gain can vary. Some babies take longer then the 'usual number of days' to get their birth weight back. One of my Little Ones took 3 weeks to get her weight back. One of the doctors in the clinic we went to was nervous about it, but when he consulted other doctors, he was told that since I was breastfeeding it was not too much of a concern as long as the diaper count was appropriate and my Little One seemed happy and alert. So I pass that on to you. Ultimately your trusted pediatrician would be best to tell you.
Congratulations on your new daughter! Welcome to falling in Love in a new way. ↑ |
| thank you all so much. your information was very helpful. im just really nervous about all of this, as this is my first child. i just wanted to make sure that i wasnt doing anything wrong. her next appt. is this thursday, so im praying that everything goes well and that my dr wont want to "supplement feed" her to see if that makes a difference. i really want to continue breastfeeding, as it is best for my little girl. thank you all once again ↑ |
| I hope your doctor doesn't recommend 'supplemental' formula. Only in very rare instances is it really needed. It is often recommended when not needed, which is a pet peeve of mine. ↑ |
well ,kelsey had her dr appt and she is now at 7 pounds 12 ounces, so she is back to her birth weight. i was given ALOT of antibiotics after my c section an dnow my baby has developed thrush. it hurts her so bad, and me as well. my dr suggested supplement feeding with formula, but i said no way. even though it hurts me like hell when she eats, breast milk is the best for her and i dont want her to refuse the breast once the thrush is gone. i can deal with the pain, as long as kelsey stays healthy.
to 3 time nursing mom: do you have any suggestions about the thrush. im using ointment but it still hurts me. is thrush something that i could have prevented? ↑ |
Tara,
I don't know much about thrush, except that it should disappear in a few days as long as you are using the prescription your doctor gave you, or whatever over the counter he or she recommended. I know it's not coming from your breastmilk, but something your baby probably had and gave to you.
But I did want to say that I think it's wonderful that despite the difficulties you are sticking with the breastfeeding. You will see in time that this time will be just a brief memory, and well worth the effort you are putting out.
Good for you!!
Your little girl is blessed to have such a loving mother! ↑ |
