I was thinking about breastfeeding because it's so healthy. But, I dont want to breastfeed long. Is 3 weeks or 6 weeks too short?

some is better than none but why wouldn't you want to considering all its benefits to baby and you?

Tameka,
Yes, it is very true that a little bit helps much more then none. The first few days of colostrum is called 'Liquid Gold' because it is so important. You are wise in starting your baby out with such a good start.

I am wondering though what prevents you from having the time?
Will you be apart from your baby for days at a time?

Well see, I'm young, 16. And I've decided to take a class during the summer for summer school so I can be ahead a class. Also I'm going to have to go back to school when it starts. I want the best for my baby but I also have to have the best for myself to provide for my baby in the future. I mean i'm a kid having a kid. And I know that and know the mockery of some people. But I dont let it bother me. Anyway, I just dont want to all the way, to breastfeed for months...but I do plan to freeze sum of my breastmilk.

Wow Tameka!
Good for you!
I have a lot of respect for you.

Yes, indeed, continuing with school and graduating is very much in not only yours but your child's best interest.

Breastfeed for as long as you feel you can. No one can ask for you to do more.
I would like to recommend that you do not approach breastfeeding with a preconceived time limit, but rather with the same spirit that comes through in the post you just made. That which is that you will do what you can with your child's best interest in mind, no matter what anyone says. I can tell that you have that strong attitude, that good attitude just by the few words you chose in your post.

So I recommend that you drop the date concepts, and just tell yourself you will do it as long as you can, and you will. And who knows how long that will be. Maybe 2 weeks, maybe 6, maybe 2 months or 3 months. Maybe even longer with supplementation.

You may choose at some point to discontinue nursing during the day, and nurse right before school, and then after, or maybe just before waking and or at bedtime, with formula being fed all other times.

You have a lot of choices tameka. And I have no doubt that you will make the best ones.

Good luck, be strong, and may you always have a good support system.
