What foods and drinks should you avoid during nursing?? What should you increase on??

My baby was born a week ago from today and she didnt nurse in the hospital so she needed formula.. well shes been doing okay nursing but will only latch on for about 7-8minutes and fall back asleep..and then sleeps for a few hours only to wake up and repeat. there is NO way she is getting enough milk because if we wake her and give her a bottle she eats a few more ounces. I was thinking of just pumping and bottle feeding her and giving up on the boob because she needs more nutrients than she is taking in in one feeding. any input would be GREAT!!

Here is a link that answers your question about what to avoid but they say nothing. I personally disagree but like they say every baby & person are different. I stayed away (not that I didnt eat them but not as often) from gassy foods (cauliflower, broccoli, beans, etc.) & stopper uppers (bananas, cheese, etc). DS also had a horrible time with Mexican which stunk because that is my fav and we lived in AZ but he also had a hard time with it when he was in my belly too. The things that you had a hard time with during pregnancy can also be hard after. It is amazing how they hold on to their preferences.

what you should eat. There really is nothing special. Of course it is best for both of you to be healthy but that’s about it. Here is another link that gives you an idea as to what sort of calorie intake you should have, etc. Also it is best to continue with your prenatal vitamins while breastfeeding.

your baby getting enough breastmilk. Please do not worry. The things you have indicated are truly not indicators of her not getting enough milk. This is definitely the #1 thing I hear from new breastfeeding moms. You are soooo not alone in your feelings!!! I am going to post the article because so many women do feel this way and I am sure it will help others also but here is the link just to make it easier.

Now
onto the little one falling asleep after 7 min of nursing, try and wake her up in between boobs. I have posted info in the sleepy baby post below also in due date on the Waking sleepy baby post. Try these things and see if that may help but in the beginning those babies can sleep (no worries that will all change). I have a pic of DS being burped in between boobs. I am holding up his head with my one hand (you know v shaped hand under the chin) and burping with the other and the poor guy is dead asleep. This happened all the time.
Basically the moral to the story is Don’t Worry (easy to say I know)! Everything you are experiencing (the doubt, the sleepy baby, the worry, etc.) is all very normal! You are doing GREAT!!! You are giving your baby a wonderful start to a healthy life. Pat yourself on the back because you are a magnificent mom!
