My little boy is 9mth old and is now eating a good selection of solid foods. He only seams to breastfeed 3 times during the day and perhaps twice throughout the night (sure these are still comfort feeds ! ! ). Is he having enough breastmilk ? I dont give him any other liquid - I have tried but not interested in learning to drink from a cup.

the aap says that breastmilk or formula should be the majority(sp?) of a babies diet until the age of 1. solids should just be for "practice" and to get used to different textures. you should cut back on the amount of solids and nurse more. solids don't have enough nutrition for a baby that young they still need to be nursing. here is a good link for breastfeeding questions: www.kellymom.com they have answers to pretty much any question you can have about breastfeeding. hope this helped.

my baby is also 9 months old and i wonder is i'm nursing her enough too...she nurses 2-3 times a day and none at night...she eats about 4-5 jars of baby food a day and also some cereal in the morning. i'm going to start her on juice probably today.

your baby doesn't need juice. in fact many doctors don't suggest juice at all for breastfed babies, they just don't need it. here is a link about juice and breastfeeding: http://www.kellymom.com/nutritio
n/solids/baby-juice.html

here
is the part about juice after 6 months.

For babies over six months

* Juice intake, like water intake, can interfere with breastfeeding because it fills baby up so that he nurses less.
* Juice should be introduced just like any other new food. For example, applesauce and apple juice should be introduced separately.
* Limit juice intake to no more than 3-4 ounces per day so that baby is not filling up on it to the extent that he has no appetite for other foods.
* Offer the juice from a cup rather than a bottle.
* Dilute the juice with equal amounts of water, or try using juice just to flavor water.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has recently released a policy statement recommending that babies younger than 6 months should not be given any juice, children aged 6 months to 6 years should get no more than 4-6 ounces per day, and children older than 7 should have no more than 8-12 ounces of juice daily.

koz- is your baby having enough wet diapers? she should be having at least 6 in 24 hr period. if she isn't then she is not getting enough breastmilk.

yes, she is having good wet diapers. i don't count them anymore, but i know she has at least 6 or more and she has good bowel movements. she is where she should be in weight so i am assuming she's getting enough. she is the only one i have nursed this long out of my 4 kids, so it's a little different for me

I didn't sleep too well worrying that I have been doing it all wrong ! ! I exclusively breastfed my baby until he was 6mths and then introduced some purees etc. Recently at a check-up (around 9mths) my doctor encouraged me to give him chicken and meat etc etc - I will try to fit more breastfeeds in throughout the day.

i'm not saying that they can't have solids at all it is just supposed to be for "practice" until 1 yr old. meat is one of the 1st things i indroduced to my son. he didn't really ever eat "baby food" he just ate food off my plate. i would just mash it up better so he wouldn't choke.

Thanks Melissa - I am so happy with myself that I am still breastfeeding - I hope to continue too way past my sons 1st birthday. The food that I am giving him is homemade bits and pieces.
