My baby is 8 months old and over 20 lbs. i have pumped enough to know that he only takes 5 oz of breast milk every 3-4 hrs. I have friends that give their 4 month old 6-8 oz of formula every 3 hrs. I know he is thriving but it seems strange to me. Is the breast milk that much richer?

Yes, breast milk is higher in fat. Also the baby sucking gets a lot more out than even the best pump!! You need to go by how many diapers are being wet, and how much weight he is gaining. If you want to know the exact volume you can weigh on a baby scale before feeding then immediately after! You said he is thriving, so that is all that matters!!

The way the doctors explained it to me is a lot of formula fed babies are overfed to begin with. They will complete an entire bottle whether they want it or not. A breast fed baby will nurse until he is satisfied. In my experiences my son nursed more times then most people would feed their children formula. So I just assumed he was getting around the same amount just in smaller more frequent quanities. I didn't realize the breast milk was higher in fat. I just went by the amount of diapers like Michele said and the fact my son seemed very contant.
