im still learning to breastfeed my baby. she was a big baby and my milk wasnt coming in yet so doctors suggested i do both breasts for about 20 min. then top her up with suppliment. so how do i know when im creating enough milk for her and can stop using the suppliment.? they also said i should be nursing ever 3 hours and if baby is sleeping i should wake her up and make sure she feeds which is fine by me but it seems like she never gets up on her own to feed and can sleep for a long time...normal or should i go to doc.? shes almost 4 days old...any sadvice.. need lots

It's normal for babies to sleep a lot in the beginning, and also normal for them to fall asleep while nursing before they are full (later on mostly, not so much at 4days since they only take about a tablespoon at a time). The best way to know if she is getting enough milk is counting her wet diapers and checking for weight gain. My doctor allows me to bring my baby in whenever I want for a weight check. Someone else on here suggested a baby scale.

If your baby is 4 days old, your milk should be coming in at any time now. You'll know when it's in - the letdown feels different, your breasts may feel engorged, and you'll see and hear the baby swallowing while eating. You can also break the latch while nursing and look to see if there is milk in the baby's mouth.

hi there they're crazy!! don't for any minute wake your baby. my little girl fed for 40minutes at a time from the day she was born and i never took her off unless i knew she was fast asleep. and i timed her one day when she slept and she slept for about six hours straight. i think demand feeding is the best way to go. i have done it since my bub was born and now she's 10 months and has slept pretty much through the night since she was 6-7 months. i think let them feed for as long as they want when they want. also mine has never had a pacifier eithr i was going to give her one but the nurse told me it really wasn't necessary unless i really thought that it was, however i think i maybe should have given it to her, but then again she never really has needed it. any way i gave my bub a ittle bit of farex at 3 months of age as i found this helped her settle. with the feeding 20 mins one side thenthe other i got told that to but instead i feed her on one breast for the whole feed and then the next time she's hungry i'd feed her on the other breast for the entire time. i think the ilk i richer this way and gives the other breast a chance to fill back up. well i hope this helps, good luck:)
