I had my daughter on march 5 and i have a question.
my daughter is on lactos free formula i use the formula if i do not have any breast milk. it seems like she is getting gassy with the formula i have no clue why. she was on the regular iorn simulac in the hospital but the formula came up on the first try and the dr switched her to the lactos free. well i have been pumping the crap out of my boobs every time she is hungry because i dont produce enough to make 2 feedings. i dont know if i am doing this all wrong or what. i am loosing alot of sleep pumping every 2 hours and it killing me so this morning i gave her 2 oz of formula and she got a little gassy.
my question
why am i not able to produce more than 2 oz in 2 hours. i drink alot of waterand i eat right. if i wait 12 hours i can get 4 oz but i dont want to give her formula anymore. i switched her bottle to the playtex drop ins yesterday and it seems to be doing ok. i also am using malycon. she is still a little gassy but better.
i dont know what to do about my milk supply. sometimes i just want to give up but i dont like her on the formula because i feel like it makes it worse. her next dr appt isnt till march 21...
sometimes i just want to break down and cry actuall i do.....why cant i produce anymore milk? and if anyone has any ideas to help me get more i will try anything..... ↓

| i am not sure if this makes alot of sense but i have gotten no sleep in a couple of days due to this....please help... = ↑ |
are you just pumping or are you nursing also? the best way to increase your milk supply is to put the babe to the breast. babies are much more efficent at getting the milk than any pump can ever be.
if for what ever reason your not(or can't) nurse her then there are some herbs you can take. one that works well on most women is called Fenugreek. you can get it at most health food stores or order it online. also many women find that eating oatmeal helps boost their supply. if all this doesn't work you can get a prescription from your doctor that can help.
breastmilk digests easier than formula does so many babies get gassy from formula no matter what brand or kind they use. if your baby is used to the breastmilk then the formula is harder on her tummy and that is why she is getting gassy.
i also suggest you see a Lactation Consultant. most hospitals have one on staff or can get you into contact with one. they would be able to help you more one on one.
hope some of this helps and good luck ↑ |
| take a look at www.colief.com ↑ |
THANKS MELISSA EVERYONE HAS RECOMENDED THE FENUGREEK. I WILL GO AND TRY TO FIND IT TOMORROW. I AM NOT SURE IF I CAN NURSE FOR REAL. I MEAN I LET HER BF EARLIER AND SHE LATCHED FOR LIKE 30 MIN AND THEN AFTER I TOOK A SHOWER SHE WAS STILL HUNGRY SO I PUMPED WHAT I COULD WHICH WAS 1 OZ AND THEN MADE 1 OZ OF FORMULA AND SHE DRANK THE WHOLE THING. I AM SO CONFUSED. I SERIOUSLY THOUGHT SHE WAS SUCKING MY WHOLE BODY DRY WHEN I WAS BF BUT HOW COULD SHE BE GETTING ANYTHING WHEN SHE DRANK HER FORMULA AND BM AFTER A 30 MIN NURSING?
THANKS ATOMIC SNOWFLAKE I WILL CHECK THAT OUT. ↑ |
babies have a need to suck. when a young baby nurses they sometimes aren't wanting to actually eat they are wanting the comfort. if they have the need to suck and you give them a bottle of course they will drink it.
the main question i have for you is why are you bottle feeding if she is able to nurse. that is just way more work for you that is unnessicary. your baby is less than a month old and babies that young have very small tummies so they eat quite often. a 30 min nursing session sounds about right to me for the age of your baby. i would stop the bottles and the formula for a few days and just nurse. if she is having 6 wet diapers in a 24 hr period then she is getting enough. you have to remember that breastmilk digests very easily and babies tummies are only the size of their fist. when my son was that age he nursed pretty much every hour to hour and a half during the day.
also there is one thing that alot of people don't know. when babies suck on a bottle as soon as they swallow more milk(or formula) goes into their mouth wether they wanted it or not. when they suck on the breast this doesn't happen. they can suck for comfort with out getting any milk at all. here is a really good link on bottle feeding a breastfed baby. this whole site has pretty much anything you would ever want or need to know about breastfeeding. i have found it very helpful.

| i don't know why it split up my link like that. this site always does that when i post links. grrr ↑ |
| Keep nursing. I know its hard, and remember you produce what they eat. 2 oz seems perfectly normal for her age. I felt that I was loosing my milk and I just kept nursing, sometimes my baby wasn't even getting anything. Dont ever give her a bottle without at least pumping or you milk will slow because your body thinks that the baby isn't eating as much and wont produce as much. ↑ |
| I COULD NEVER PUMP!!!!! Get your baby on your BOOB!!! She will be happier. Forget about the malycon forget about the formula. You aren't producing any milk because your baby is making it. The stimulation of the pump is different than that of your baby actually nursing. Spend the next two days doing NOTHING but feeding your baby from your breast and you will be alot happier.....,. ↑ |
| I meant to say because you baby ISN"T making it. It is a supply and demand thing. The more you actually nurse the more milk you will produce, the more milk you produce the more she will nurse. Relax. ↑ |
thanks girls. i really apriciate your time on giving me advice. my baby is now nursing but i am sooo busy i pump also and give her my milk through a bottle. when i get enough time i nurse and she dosent seem to mine the bottle or the breast she loves both. i have so many errands today i have to drop her off with my mother n law and i have to make her bottles. i feel bad when i give her bottles but she gets nursed at least 2 times a day when i am busy and all day when i am not busy. also when i make her formula i make it where she gets 2 1/2 oz and i only give her enough formla powder to make 1 oz just o make it easier to digest and she gets enough that way and its not so bad. last night when i was nursing i noticed my nipple was peeling and its nasty. but oh well...i let her continue after i took all the skin off.
well thanks again. i need to head to the bank and go buy some cloths for my son. man he grows fast. i also need to go and get more cloths for my precious pop tart she got alot of cloths from the baby shower but i found the right outfit i want her to wear at night so its easier to changer her diaper and i only got one. so talk to yall later..... ↑ |
| if your nipples are peelilng and sore then you should get some lanoish. it is a brand of lanolin that you don't have to wash off before nursing or pumping. also don't use soap on your nipples when you take a shower(or bath). the soap dries them out more and will make them crack. also if your nipples are sore then after you get done nursing or pumping rub squeeze a little milk out and rub it on your nipples and let them air dry. the milk has antibodies in it and will help them feel better in no time. glad to hear that your little one is doing better. ↑ |
| thanks melissa i will try that. ;) ↑ |
I pumped for 4 days straight, every 2 hours and I was getting nothing also I wasnt sleeping very well, I started to sleep more after a few days rest my milk came pouring in.
Dont stress yourself out( I know its hard not to) but you want to get rest and hopefully it will happen, I know a friend of mine took pills to get the milk to come in.
Good luck ↑ |
| the milk on my nipple helped after I feed, I do that almost everytime. ↑ |
| brandiss i know we dont talk often but ill leave u my # on myspace, give me a call or ill email u later and i have few suggestions\ ↑ |
| MIZZ -- you sound so frustrated! Nurse, nurse, nurse! I know its hard, but if you have errands see if someone will run them for you. The more you bottle feed, the less you'll produce. If you have to spend all day nursing to get your supply up for a week or so, do it. Also the cream is Lansinoh, and is safe for babies. You can even put it on your baby's lips if they get chapped. Also, if your baby wants to just suck for comfort, she is probably getting gassy from the bottle because she is getting a steady supply of milk. At the breast, there are times when she "empties" the breast, and there is very little milk coming (maybe a drop every few sucks). This is going to work good for both of you -- the longer she stays to suck, the more your nipple will be stimulated and the more milk you will supply. You can have multiple let downs during a feeding, so although at time your milk will slow and the baby can just flutter suck for comfort, she will eventually get more milk when you let down again. I have a good milk supply, and during each feeding I will have at least 2 let downs on one side. My baby is a big comfort sucker (as she doesnt get a binky or bottle). Do you give your baby a binky? If so, I would suggest stopping, and allowing her to suck at the breast instead for comfort. That will satisfy her sucking needs, as well as stimulate you to produce more milk. Good luck! :) ↑ |
