| Hi Sick mama, Hope you are drinking plenty of fluids. You are able to take aceteminophen (like "Tylenol"). I would call the doc about anything else though. Do not take any products with aspirin! I'm suffering through the same sort of stuff. I've been drinking a lot of lemon and ginger tea with honey, it helps. Ginger is real good for sore throats, as is lemon, and honey. If you are unable to find lemon ginger tea, you can easily make some with a bit of scraped ginger root placed in a 'tea ball' and a tablespoon or so of lemon juice (to taste). Fresher is better, but an even easier way is to put a spoonful or two of lemon juice in a cup, sprinkle some ground ginger from your spice cabinet on top, then fill cup with hot water and add honey. Heat up 4 or so cups of water for your tea, pour enough out in a cup with your teabag, and while that is steeping, bend your head over the remaining hot water (in a pot or bowl) with a large towel over your head, and steam your face for about 5 minutes. That will help your sinuses a bit. Use a mentholatum rub (like Vick’s Vap-o-Rub) where you need it (nose, throat, chest) and top it with a hot water bottle. Keep a humidifier/vaporizer going in your bedroom at night, just make sure it's the cool water kind to prevent young hands pulling down scalding burns upon themselves. I've just purchased (but yet have to try) a new product out on the market now that looks interesting. It is called "Sudacare shower soothers". It is a tablet that you put on the shower floor when you run a hot shower, and vapors rise up. It sounds interesting enough. Maybe that will help your sinuses. Those sore throats really suck. I have one right now. My doc has me taking ibuprofen, but my Little One is over 3 so she can handle it if it comes through the breastmilk. I don't know how old your Little One is, so check with your Little One's doctor to see if you can take ibuprofen. Some people might be grossed out by this, but your breastmilk has antibacterial properties and antibodies, and according to my cousin, one of the best things for a sore throat is gargling with your own breastmilk. I have read of others doing this and they swear by it. Who knows, I may have wrapped my head around the concept well enough now to try it myself tomorrow if I still have my own sore throat….I’ll get back to you on that. lol I know gargling with salt water helps numb a sore throat. A friend gargles with a bit of whiskey and then spits it out. She claims it helps her, but I've not tried that not being fond of the taste of whiskey. If it's effective, I think it would be worth using, for such a small amount would not affect your breastmilk. It really sucks when our Little One's get it first, for they have to suffer through it. I am always relieved when I get sick first, because I know the breastmilk passes my immunities on and my Little One won't catch it, even if other members of the household do. Hope you found this helpful. Get well soon. ↑ |
