I personally am not opposed to giving my baby a pacifier...but I was waiting to avoid nipple confusion. Now I'm not sure about giving it to her, because I don't want to be giving her the paci and cheating her out of feedings, if she's actually hungry. Did you give your babies pacifiers? When did you start?

I tried a pacifier on my son right away, but he wouldn't take it. It wasn't until he was 3 weeks and ended up in childrens hospital for a week and I wasn't able to feed him. He took that pacifier pretty fast. They recommend them to prevent SIDS now and they have ones that support brestfeeding. Don't get the NUK ones or anything else with the orthodontic nipple. They don't need those until teeth start coming in. Get the straight ones. Avent makes great ones.

Thanks Randi -- I have the Avent ones (I picked a brand and stuck with it -- we have Avent bottles for pumped feedings, too) and the soothies that they give at the hospital are straight as well. They gave her one the night before we went home, and we had trouble latching the next day, so I've been paranoid about giving it to her...I think we're pretty well established with b/f now (she's just over 3 weeks) but I'm just worried about giving it to her thinking she's not hungry when she really is.

oh---did giving it to him cause any b/f trouble?

I actually gave DS one as soon as we got home. He loved it! We breastfed until he self weaned and there was never any confusion. Now trying to wean him is another thing all together but if I did not give it to him in the begining he would have been feeding 24/7. He already fed every 1 1/2 hours. It definetly helped me then.

I had trouble with breastfeeding anyway... he was tongue tied and did a lot of damage before they noticed. To make a long story short, i was having pain that would make me scream everytime he latched on. They told me it was all these different things and I finally quit after 12 weeks. People told me it was normal, or that I was a wimp. I ended up with Reynauds disease on my nipples because he did so much damage in those first couple days and I was made to nurse through it by my nurses. I didn't know any better... they told me that my son spitting up my blood was normal!!
He latched perfectly after they clipped his tongue and the soother didn't seem to interfere. I was having pain for different reasons. The soother is great for in the car or when the baby is falling asleep. I couldnt' live without one for him lol

that's right, I remember you talking about your troubles before...I guess i just try it and see what happens. I actually gave her one this evening for a little bit, and she took it like it was her job...and a little later spit it out and started crying -- which was my indication that she will still tell me when she's hungry! It took a minute to convince her she wanted my boob right after she spit the pacifier out, but I think she'll be ok

After the positive replies here and in SAHM, I felt better about giving baby a pacifier, and we tried it last night....and it was great! She sucked on it until she fell asleep, woke up a little when it fell out, but went right back to sleep without it! It was awesome, especially since she's had a hard time going down the previous few nights!

That's so awesome. I'm glad it worked. My son seems to sleep a million times better with his pacifier. Sometimes it's the only thing that calms him when he just doesn't know what he wants.

Pacifiers are a god sent! I am so happy it worked. This may lead to some happier days and nights (and you thought it couldn't get any better).
