I am getting married in two weeks. My nerves will be crazy the day of my wedding. Doctor's say that 1 glass of red wine is actually good for you and the baby. This question might sound weird but does the baby get drunk and could it cause any birth defects?

Ok, this is a great question to ask as I'm a little confused on the topic myself.

In health books I have read that a glass of red wine can benefit the baby. But I also read everywhere that NO AMOUNT of alcohol is safe?

What kind of a conclusion are we supposed to make?

That's where I am trying to get!!
I don't mind skipping that glass to assure my baby's health but at the same time I would like to have something to calm the nerves! :-)

My doctor said a glass of wine occasionally is fine. I had one on my wedding day and I was 4 months pregnant. I have also read that no alcohol is safe, its such a crazy subject. Im sure there are so many differnt opinions on it, but mine is that one glass will be fine

I just think maybe the doctors are just watching their backs because people are so quick to sue?
I actually read that red wine is going for blood circulation.

Yes, I just googled the topic and this is the conclusion that I have come to...

Whether or not your Doctor says it is good for your baby to have a small amount of red wine, NO AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL IS SAFE. Drinking a small 4oz glass of red wine with a meal has not been known to cause any defects for your baby however, that is something that you need to decide for yourself.

Basically, if you drink any alcohol at all while you are pregnant you are putting your baby at risk. However, small small amounts once and a while aren't likely to have an effect.

My conclusion...I'm not taking any chances and having that one glass of red wine to calm my nerves just isn't worth any risk at all on my unborn child.

Yes, red wine is good for circulation in adults. Not in babies. And everything you consume, your baby does. So although that is a valid point for any adult. It's not a good argumental standpoint for a pregnant woman.

That's what kept going through my head, if something happens no else to blame but myself. It is selfish to have that wine not considering the health of my baby so the decision will be easy. I am going to avoid that drink!
Thanks!

I completely agree with your decision. Maybe an herbal tea or something along those lines will help you to calm your nerves on your big day...best of luck and congratulations!

I had two glasses of wine when I was pregnant for my son and he turned out perfect and he is actually one of the smartest 3 year olds I have ever seen. It is definately your judgement call and if you dont feel that you should take the risk then dont. Just because my son was ok doesnt mean the same outcome will happen to every mother who drinks a glass of wine.

1 8oz glass of red wine is fine..

Studies have shown that red wine have tons of antioxidants which can actually promote a healthy cholesterol and blood pressue levels, and may help protect from certain cancers and heart disease...

I asked my doc the same thing and he said sure!! 1 glass isnt going to hurt at all.. and will help with the baby's health as well.. most of the alcohol is already absorbed into your liver from your blood stream before it gets to the baby.. so even if the baby ends up with an little alcohol the effects are minimal... and there are no known defects from drinking an occasional glass of wine.

Just to clarify on that last post...alcohol will not benefit your baby. The benefits of drinking a small (4oz on all the sites I read while pregnant) glass of red wine are only for the mother and none for the baby. The baby will recieve that alcohol before it gets to your liver but because it's such a small amount it tends not to create any major problems if done in moderation.

However, I encourage you all to google this topic for yourselves because no where have I read that it is OK for the baby. Everywhere I read says use your own judgement because the effects of that amount of alcohol on a baby is not really known and even if they are small...it still might be affecting your child.

I'm not saying you can't have red wine. I'm just saying that promoting the thought that it's good for your baby would be incorrect.
