So I just read on Babycenter that pregnant women are supposed to avoid any smoked or cured foods such as oysters and pepperoni b/c these foods can contain bacteria such as E Coli and listeria. OMG...I don't eat pepperonio that ofteh, but Geesh sometimes it just sounds good, especially the turkey kind.

You CAN eat pepperoni pizza-since the meat will be cooked. And you also can have tuna, just not everyday( can tuna that is). I have asked my doctor all these questions especialy at the begining of my pregnancy I was eating tuna twice a week, and my doctor had no problem with that, mercery is very low in can tuna, I would eat sushi tuna.

COnnie,
They just did a study in the states and found canned tuna from south america, which most canned tuna is from here, to have extrememly high mercury levels. Too high even for a non-pg person. They did, however, find that tuna that comesfrom asia to have much lower and safer mercury levels. My dr. said tuna only once a week...I think everyy dr. is different.

awww I luv pepperoni too :(

oh well it's cooked so it's okay then right? If it's on baked pizza?

Since 'asian tuna' is better, does anyone know which brands have tuna only from asia?

I usually rinse my canned tuna like crazy, but I'm sure that won't do much, I read somewhere that the more you rinse though, the less mercury contained.

Um.... oops. That is the first I've heard of that. And, I'm sorry but I am a tuna addict and in the beginning of my pregnancy (even though I knew it was wrong) I ate tuna like crazy. I couldn't help myself. And I was worried about gaining too much weight this pregnancy and thought that me eating tuna was better than me eating greasy cheeseburgers.... But, I guess chicken is good for you too. LOL. :)

And, thanks guys, now I want a big cheesy pepperoni pizza. :)

Kristy,
My doctor said once a week is fine or more. I also work in the hospital in Post Partum & Labor Delievery for 2 years and I never heard it was bad from any doctor( well in moderation).
But I am from Canada so maybe we get our tuna from some where else.

connie,
It's b/c of the bacterium Listeria which can cause the infection Listeriosis which is 20 times more likely in a pregnant woman. It is one of the few infections that can also infect the baby causing premature delivery and even m/c. It's also present in deli meats and some smoked and cured foods, mainly smoked fish b/c the temperature doesn't reach high enough sometimes. Listeria is also present in undercooked hot dogs.

If I can't pronounce it,I dont think I should eat it, or if it does't sound like something you can eat too.
Thanks, I think you should be the food person here.
O.K , but I do like candy and I know that there is lots of chemicals in there-crap!!

I'm so guilty of eating things I'm not supposed to. I'm a sucked for Feta cheese and had some this weekend, and I had a bologna sandwich today...I just think all of the "no no's" are interesting

I'm thinking they are talking about uncooked pepperoni. I ate alot of pepperoni pizza when I was pregnant with my son and he turned out just fine. Since my son is fine I plan on continue to eat pepperoni pizza. I would never think about eating the pepperoni raw though. Infact just had pepperoni pizza tonight for supper.

I never liked pepperoni...until i got pregnant. Now i really crave pizza hut stuffed crust pepperoni and muchroom pizzas. It's become a handicap. Sometimes they are all i think about.

Maybe they mean pepperoni sticks. I do know pepperoni is bad for you. lots of nitrates and salt. Tuna has the mercury so you can't eat too much. I hate how you're not supposed to do anything when your pregnant.

Yes, it's true with the deli meats. But if you microwave the food until you see steam, you will have killed the Listeria.
Pepperoni & smoked meats contain larg amounts of nitrates & nitrates are thought to cause cancer.
Tuna you can have 3 servings a week.
