Okay, y'all. I'm not a first time mom, actually this is my second, but I don't know why I'm dreading the glucose test more than the actual birthing of my little one. Every time I think of that thick, sugary goop that they make you drink, I start gagging and generally end up over the toilet. Now, I'm 21 weeks along and morning sickness has passed for a good while. However, I'm wondering what I can do to prime myself for it this time. See, Last time I was able to drink sodas and other sugary drinks through my pregnancy, but this time... oy, it's awful if I try to drink a coke. I actually held down a Sprite today. So any advice on how to get myself ready to drink that dreaded bottle of orange sludge???

This is my 1st pregnancy and I'm almost 20 weeks. When do they give this test? Does everyone have to take it?

I'm thinking they do the test around your 28th week, but I could be wrong... Let me go check....

It says in a book that I have that it's done between the 24th and 28th week, and it's a test to check of gestational diabetes. It is done at this time because the placenta begins to make greater levels of hormones that affect insulin use. The test involves drinking aforementioned "sludge", which is relatively like having a bottle of soda with about a cup or so of extra sugar added. You've got about 5 minutes to drink it and you HAVE TO KEEP IT DOWN. You are not allowed to eat or drink before you go in for this test, so this is the only thing in your stomach. You must sit for one hour (take a good book or a game boy) and then your blood will be drawn. If results are over 140 mg/dl, further testing will be done.

And yes, I think all women who are pregnant have to go through this lovely test, be it your first pregnancy or 20th...

i am dreading this test as well. I am a 2nd timer mom-to-be also. i am only 14 weeks and have been thinking about that test too.
I hate the taste an its so hard not to gag yourself isn't it.
I am glad i am not the only one who seems to think that is the worst part of pregnancy...

I almost wish they could just spin that fluidy guk into some kind of cotton candy type deal. Goodness, it's got enough sugar in it. I mean, come on, who wouldn't take eating gobs and gobs of cotton candy over drinking cold, extra thick pancake syrup??

The orange sludge isnt half as bad as the pure syrupy cola that they will make you drink if the orange one will show that your sugar will raise up. Its what I dread the most too. I remember doing the 4 hour glucose test and where they check your sugar every hour and by the 2 hour i just threw up all over the lab. Sorry .. i know this isnt helping. The only thing I was able to do was to put my leg up, i bought some pillows with me and ate some ice ships. I tried not to move because of fear that I will end up throwing everything up which only meant i had to do everything all over again. Good luck.

Wow, I didn't know this was so dreaded! The drink that I had wasn't that bad, actually it was pretty good, I think it was fruit punch. My doctor gave me the bottle and told me to freeze for an hour before I drank it so it was slushy-like. I drank it an hour before my appointment so my blood was drawn as soon as I went in to the office. I'm glad I didn't have ya'lls doctor, LOL

Oh god, I too hate this test. I can not stand anything orange regardless of whether or not I am pregnant so it make it that much worse. I am 15 weeks as of today with my second and actually have tried to forget about until someone in another post mentioned that they were going to check her sugars because she was measure further along then where she was actually.

Yes they have other flavors. My nurse set aside the fruit punch one and one that was lemen lime. I have tasted all three and the best is the fruit punch. I feel the lemon lime is like drinking the syrup to mountain dew without the carbonation yuck. See what other flavors they have....

i'm at 28 weeks and my doctor didn't inform me i was supposed to have the Flucose Tolerance test done till I went in for my appointment. But the orange drink they gave me, mine wasn't thick or gross. Mine kinda tasted like a melted orange popsicle. It wasn't too bad. Maybe I just got lucky i don't know. Good luck to all of you.

I had to do this test twice since my dad has diabetes. I heard horror stories from everyone about it and I was so nervous by the time I got to the test. I had the orange drink which i thought tasted like orange soda w/ extra sugar. I did fine though and didn't throw up or pass out either time. I think any wooziness I felt was more nerves then anything else. Try to go in w/ a positive attitude and good luck!

I just got my "sludge" on my last appt and have to take it here in two weeks. They gave me a choice between orange, 7up and root beer. so maybe if you ask you can get a choice between the evils.

Having the drink really cold helps. I threw mine up too, so I am not much help, other than it was easier to get down cold. Good luck!

I remember hearing from several people that when the drink is offered, go for the fruity punch one... rumor has it that it sorta tastes like Hawaiian Punch with the proper amount of sugar in it. Well I asked, when I went in for the test with my first child, and seems they were out. Great. So I went for the other option that was on the "not-so-bad" list. The orange one. Now, I'm not one of these people that can sit down and drink a soda in 5 or 10 minutes. It takes a while since I like to "enjoy" my drinks. So, when they told me I only had 5 minutes to drink it, I freaked out. I remember the woman next to me having to do the same test was pinching her lips between sips too... and she, heaven help her, picked the "root beer" flavored one.

I had the lemon lime one and the orange one and I didn't think they were too bad. I never knew about this fruit punch one though, I will have to ask for it next time. What other flavors do they have???

I've heard of the lemon lime, which I was told to be awful. Then there is the orangey one, and a "cola" flavored something-or-other. The fruit punch one is still a mystery to me. Now I'm curious to find out if anyone else knows what other flavors are on the menu?

Depending on your doctor you will either get your sluge before hand to drink right before you arrive at the doctor so they can take you test right away, or you'll have to wait until you get to the doctor.

Hold your nose and just drink it. I've only had the privilage of drinking the orange, never had an option. This time around I will have to wait and see. I hate lemon lime, root bear with to much sugar I don't think so and cola, yeah I think I will take orange if that is offered. But I will definately try the Fruit Punch if that is offered.
