It's 9:45 at night and I am online trying to help a parent with information about ADD because as her child's teacher, I care about her child. I have no desire to encourage her to have her daughter assessed for my own benefit- I will only have this girl for 3 more days before the summer begins. I am genuinely concerned about her daughter's ability to function in a school/work environment to the extent that she can learn what she needs to learn to be a functioning member of society. I do not want her daughter to be "drugged up" but I also don't want her to be denied medication, if necessary, that would help her feel and be successful. Children who have trouble focusing are often lower academically than their classmates, frequently hear their name called in order to be told to pay attention, and can easily start to feel bad about themselves. I would like to find alternate ways to treat ADD other than medication, but I would also like to find another way to treat my asthma as well. Fortunately for me, there is no stigma about asthma that prevented my parents from getting me the medication I need. I would encourage any parent of a child who's teacher is saying they are concerned about their ability to concentrate to consider the fact that this teacher may actually care about your child and no teacher enjoys being in a position of having to be the bearer of bad news. Please at least check with your doctor and get an assessment, do some research, and then make an informed decision. Teachers did not make up this "disease" as an excuse to not work with certain students. We actually spend quite a bit more time working with these children than we do with others in our classrooms.

There is a specific diet you can find online called the "Feingold Diet." My daughter has been on it for 2 months, and is a completely different child :) Also, I suggest an MRT inflammatory blood test, to see what foods, your child's body, specifically does not like. (not an allergy test). It takes a lot of guess work out of the Feingold Diet to move to stage 2 quickly.
