I have a 12 yr old son who has been tested to have "learnign disablities." We first noticed problems in 1st grade with reading. Our son has alway been well behaved and we were told for 2 more years that he just needed to mature. He fell more and more behind. He was tested in school in 3rd garde and was placed in special ed. He was suddenly getting A's...imagine that! 1 year later in an IEP meeting I wanted to see the growth....and he had moved backwards! They promised me the sun, moon and stars and I trusted them! Bad choice. I later found out that most children placed in special ed never move out. I was floored that I could not trust my distric with my sons education. I went out on my own...spent thousands on private tutoring, vision therpy and so on. We did get some results, but not anything close to what we needed. My son is now in 7th grade and remains about 2 years behind in reading and language. I live in small town Alaska and I have few resources here. I spend hours helping my son through homework to keep his grades up. I spend lots of time at the school and my son is very social and has lots of friends. The reading thing is a huge situation. We are both frustrated and not sure what to do next. Has anyone lived this? Any ideas?

Yes, I am living it currently. My daughter is 10 in the 5th grade and reads at the 2nd grade level. You need to go to your state dept of education and see if you can get an advocate to help you in your county. I did this. There are laws that the school MUST abide by to give your child an appropriate and fair education. If his current school can't provide for him, then the school district is obligated to bus him and pay for a program that will. In the meantime, try some things like leap pad learning toys for reading, computer software for reading, use the computer as a resource. Go to google, you might just find a wealth of information that you can do for him in the meantime. Good luck!

Have you tried a Brain Make Over. This is the ultimate type of evaulation and retraining without medication to get your son back ontrack. They have a proven track record of success in simlar circumstances where other treatments have failed.

We have been through this ourselves and it has worked fantastically!
