I have a 14 yr.old who is reliant on nasal decongestants to keep his nasal passages clear. If he stops taking them his nose gets stuffy and runny and red and irritated and then it takes about 3 days of the nasal decongestants to clear him up again. But he must rely on these pills everyday to remain stuffy/runny nose free. They are generic nasal decongestants that come from the dollar store. I buy them there because anywhere else they are $5 and at dollar store they are $1 per box. My son has been reliant on these pills for a few years and they work as long as he keeps taking them.He had a sinus surgery done a few years ago and was ok for awhile and then began having the same problem again. The Dr. then said the surgery was only temporary. So here we are reliant on these nasal decongestants. Is this harmful to him in any way? Whenever he has a doctor appt. and they ask if hes on any meds ,I always tell them, hes on these nasal decongestants but they dont say anything, they just write it down. Hes been on them so long I guess if there was going to be a problem it would have come up by now. I dont like him having to be reliant on anything but its the only thing that works. Do you think this is o.k.? Is there something better I should have him on? I just think he will be reliant on these things for life. Do any of your children have this problem? If so,what do they take and is it a constant everyday year round thing?

My son has the same problem but only around this time of year, I've found that lots of fluids, believe it or not, but I make him drink 4 to 5 16oz water bottles a day and cut out all dairy products, because that produces more mucas and he was cleared up in about 3 days. I was like you I tried all different kinds of decongetants and nose sprays.
Good luck! I hope this works for him
