The existing PETA post has gotten a bit long, and what with the introduction of a liar - Redjoey -, then I thought I'd add a new post, as I won't be returning to the existing PETA post anymore. But this is a genuine question for everyone except the nutcase Redjoey who lies that she runs a shelter, as any silly posts from her will now be ignored.

I see that the main problem people have with PETA is the fact that they euthanise animals, and ironically it seems to be meat eaters who have the biggest problem with that. But why are meat eaters so upset that PETA euthanises animals, when they have animals slaughtered unneccessarily for their dinner every evening? I'm not an advocate for PETA! I haven't even researched too deeply into their organisation. I'm not here to support them! It's too controversal. I volunteer for an animal shelter near my home, which has a no-kill animal policy. And I think it's wrong to kill healthy animals. But then I think it's wrong to kill all healthy animals, no matter what species. And this post is in NO way complaining about the fact that meat eaters eat meat. That's not the issue I have here. In fact, as much as it troubles me that animals are being slaughtered, I've accepted that people do eat meat, and as long as I don't, then I am a happy woman. :) This is entirely separate from that. But It's just a thought. Why care about those animal's right to live to the point where PETA angers you, when you don't care about the animals you eat right to live?

My thought also...

I feel every little bit helps. With each attempt to stop or even cut back on meat consumption is some thing worth praising. Even if one can cut back on their meat consumption it with help save lives and one more animal will be saved. A vegetarian should not look down on another who is attempting to change their ways by saying...you cant have feelings for all animals because you eat meat. It is not just the meat eating industry that plays a roll in mass animal cruelty. The dairy industry plays a far bigger roll in animal cruelty then the meat industry does. I don't say this to try and justify meat eating, I am ashamed that I eat meat! I do try each day to cut meat from my diet. If one wants to be totally guilt free then they must practice the vegan way, that means dairy fish and all meat must be excluded from ones diet. When one can achieve that status then they can truly say ...I don't contribute to animal cruelty!

PETA is all about saving animals - so isn't it bit hypocritical that they kill the animals they work so hard to save? Take a look at www.petakillsanimals.com :D

Jessica this is a highly debatable subject that has already been debated here in another post labeled PETA. The link you provided has also been mentioned in that topic. If you go back and find the post you will read that there is a fair debate on the side for PETA as well. One can not know the exact truth to what the media prints unless they are directly involved.

I don't agree with all that PETA does but I also don't disagree with them either. There is good and bad with every organization, people will always find some thing to dislike! However... for me it isn't about PETA or any other organization... its about me! and what I do in my life to contribute to animal life.

I do think if more people stopped complaining about what they hear or read and actually played a roll in helping this cause there would be a lot more progress.

I agree that it's wrong to kill animals (heathy that is...if an animal is suffering totally different story), but i went to a no kill shelter and it was run poorly. Actually it sickened me. I know this was one shelter but it still left a big impact, because i cant watch animals suffer. The shelter cages were rusted an old.....the paper that told about the dog, where faded or never filled out. I love all animals, so if an animal does domething worng i dont blame it....there has to be a reason (in my opioin) . I looked at all the dogs and not one was in proper health. The hair was extremly matted, or atleast way too long. The cages were in a metal room, basically, and it was about 100 degrees inside. It was truely horrific. Then i knelt beside a cage to coax the dog to come greet me, it walked slowly, then pounced on the cage and tried to bite me. No one is ever going to adopt that dog...im not saying euthanize it, but atleast train him. Most of the dogs had been there for well over a year. We ran out of the place very fast. I could tell they didnt have money, but i really didnt like what i saw. I'm not going to report them but shouldnt i do something? In this case would euthanization for dogs that are suffering be the best bet?

i have volunteered at shelters and also done care and transport for other rescue groups i have had to take part in humane euthanasia and in some cases the animals were in so much pain physically and or psycologicly that they were in need of escape from that pain. i dont feel that any action goes without punishment of some type and i suffer with the guilt of being involved but i will carry that guilt proudly and hope that for every one that we can not save that we will save at least on other i also hope that if i am in the situation where some one could make that decision regarding my life that they can look at my needs and not their feelings when they choose. i am not a vegetarian but i do not eat beef or pork i have no problem with people who do and i also rescue chickens and rabbits at my own home as well as doing some private rescue and fostering of dogs and cats i have also been known to provide a ly over for larger farm animals as well where i live we have no local PETA chapter or any other groups with a common goal

lauren please hang in there im not sure how old you are but from your reaction im sure that this will be the first of many things that will disgust you. if you are truly serious about helping then you could start a letter writng campaign that states that you want those animals to be rescued properly and or you could start a fund raising program locally in my area we have doggy and kitty banks at the local stores and they each have a name tag to make them look like a real case it provides alot of extra money at the end of the month you can also put an ad in the local news paper or wwrite a letter to the editor letting the people know that the shelter needs donations of money old sheets and other items alot of hotels and motels will donate sheets and pet stores donate alot of toys pet smart is a good one to ask for donations local vets will donate time and medicine and make sure that at the bottom of everything that you write be sure to remind people to spay or neuter their pets because that is the true cause of these problems ignorant people breed problems that are very hard to fix so educate your public and dont get frustrated

Cherisalorraine I do agree with you, yes... some animals even in shelters are not in the healthiest conditions. Even though they are in a shelter they do deserve a comfortable release from the pains they are experiencing. Not every shelter animal is adoptable nor are they in good health. I have seen many very sick and injured animals being brought to shelters, animals that should be euthanised on arrival. These animals deserve a comfortable passage way out! they should not be kept alive because of another persons believe that it is cruel to kill them. I think of myself as a humane person, with life and death!

Thanks guys :)
cherisalorraine-Well...i just turned 13. I'm in the process of typing up a letter that will sound mature enough for consideration. It took years for me to conveince my mom into allowing my mom to get me a dog(didnt work out long story anyway!) so im not one to give up :) I am kinda scared, to do this all alone.

I'm one for spaying and neutering pets :)
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE SHELTER PETS DIE!!!! :)

lauren thank you for reading i hope that you are able to get the results you want if you need any help let me know at [email protected] i will give the advice that i can and you have the right idea for a slogan remember short and sweet and easy to chant or repeat to the millions of people who will listen and if some of the animals are lost remember you are doing what you can and it should be the responsibility of the adults in your area who should be responsible people because of age and experience alone and if they dont listen when you try to talk reason just talk louder.and if you have any college based or public funded radio or tv stations in your area use them they can be a great resource for other people wiht a common goal

and also rember that maturity isnt always what causes the people to listen some times it is just getting the facts into the public some times things get fixed because they are ashamed of what they have done wrong. if you put a 13 year old in charge of the compassion end of things then you get a truer argument than a time hardend person who has seen many battles

if you write a letter just make some copies and send the same letter to the places it needs to go it will have to be slightly generic but make your point if you are truly worried then dont add your personal info. some times when you get the message out there other people will notice and really get involved. see if you have a local chapter of the ASPCA orSPCA they can be a big help but dont take on more than you can even if you only mail 3 letters a week you are making a difference the squeaky wheel gets the oil. if your friends wont help try your local 4-H extension office and see if you have any dog groups in your area they may help with fund raising for the shelter and they have parent advisers and adults can be a big help. you could also put a notice for help on bulletin boards at school and your local stores the more help you have the less you have to do so that you wont have to spread your self so thin your education is the most important thing you need to take care of at this time you might also have your mom read our letters so that she can see how serious you actually are it might open her up a little to the idea of helping you like i said if you need help or want me to read over any thing you write for suggestions then send me a copy to [email protected] i would offer more help but i dont know the name of the kennel or the location if your mom says its ok then you can email me and let me know i dont suggest putting it on the site because you never know who will read it and at your age people shouldnt know where you are

Thank you so much! I know i will type a letter and first send it out to all my friends and see the reactions i get. About 6 months ago when i started becomming really involved i wrote a letter to a magazine i get called "Dogs For Kids" and my letter got published! :D They named me animal adovacate. I wrote the letter by email and didnt tell any one, when i got the magazine i opened it up and i read a letter and i was like "OMG thats MY letter!" I'll post more later...but i have to go to bed :)

Name: cherisalorraine | Date: Sep 7th, 2007 2:18 PM
congratulations on the magazine you are an animal advocate. try writing a letter to the editor explaining what you are doing now and ask if they might be interested in some free advertising by offering an incentive for people to help out.they might give some free copies of the magazine to people who donate at least $5 or match donations. its a good idea to send the letter to your friends but remember that not every one is going to support your cause and at you age alot of your friends are going to be wrapped up in having fun and they are not ready to devote their time to something other than themselves (perfectly natural though it may be frustrating) you may also do well to send it to some of your moms friends that way you get the opinions of more than one age group keep me posted i check daily to read about your progress

Name: cherisalorraine | Date: Sep 8th, 2007 1:50 AM
that doesnt mean to write daily i am on here any way so i just check
