i just got a 7 month old italian greyhound/min pin and i need some tips on house breaking him. also he seems to have "chosen" me. that would be great but i also have 2 small children that are wanting to pet him and love him. is it a min pin's nature to chose one owner? i had one before and did not have this problem. and i have researched on I.G.'s alot and not found anything about them being aggressive. he doesn't bite them, he just gives them a "warning" ya know. but i am afraid he may get worse. what can i do? i have waited 10 years to get an italian greyhound and i REALLY don't want to have to sell him =(

and one more thing.....

he has been raised in raised in a kennel. only interacing with his owner and his siblings. so he has had a bit of time adjusting to being indoors too. i think maybe it's all just a bit too much for him to take in all at once. but any tiips you give to help me make this transition easier for him would be great!

Do you have a crate? I know that there are mixed feelings on crate training but I think it works.

Plus give him time, you ust got him, he isn't settled in yet. Remember that most puppies see small kids as their litter mates, so they may snipp at them. Not saying that it is okay.
I just bought a dog training book, and as I read it, I catch myself nodding at I read it, everything makes so much sense as I read it.

well he listens to ME pretty good. if i say NO then he stops. but i don't want to not be around at some point and him ending up biting one of my kids. he seems to just be nervous still so i think i'll give it about a week or so and see what happens. til then i will keep an eye on him!!!

DO you still have the pit bull heather? I would crate train him as well. It's a safe place for the pup to go when it gets to be too much. My dogs are crate trained, they come in from outside, I say "In", they go in and settle down and then are let out. One of my dogs always goes back to his kennel, especially if he is the only dog in the house. He takes toys and treats in there. It's also a lot safer to have them kenneled when you are not around, that way there is no risk of them eating something harmful, or chewing wires. As for your kids, let them near him, but make sure they are calm and if the dog seems stressed, back them off. The dog has been thrown into a scary new situation. He has no idea who all of you are. He is probably just stressed, and if you don't take it easy there is a danger that he could snap. Grey hounds are generally not aggressive...they are kind of skittish sometimes though, and min pins have big attitudes and need to be put in their place quite often. Just take it easy on him and watch him closely for signs that it's becoming too much.

Randi, my dogs are the same way. You tell them Kennel up, and they go in. Our older dog was crate trained, but now he has run of the house, our puppy is still crate trained. She will go in there to eat her treats or to take a nap. When we started to let our older dog sleep at night out of his kennel, I would still find him sleeping in there.

That's funny. Maybe the pit will help with his training? I wouls stick him in his crate at night. I did from day one. My one pup was 8 weeks when we started him, the other dog I got when she was 4 months old. They both took to it right away, and they will cry to come in now at night...around 9pm and will go right into their kennels to bed. Dogs like the whole "den" feeling. That's what the kennel mimics. Just make sure it's not too big, or the dog night go to the bathroom in it. It keeps them out of trouble : )

Hubby needs show him as much attention as possible. They just need some bonding time alone. Have him start feeding him special treats when you leave the house or the room.

well i have called the breeder and she has offered to take him back and give us another dog. she said this one has a better temperment and is really laid back. this is really breaking my heart! i have cried and loved on buddy all night. as soon as hubby walked in from work buddy started growling at him. he has been nipping at the kids all day. i just can't have him around my kids. and not even 5 minutes after hubby got home buddy bit him! he can't even go near him without getting bit! it's just too much. gonna be a sad day when i take him back. i'm gonna cry and cry and cry!! =((

Oh sweetie, I am so sorry!!! Are you getting another one?

Name: hdc_momof2 | Date: Apr 10th, 2007 3:47 AM
well she has another male. it's the only one left. and he is the runt of the bunch. she said he has a really laid back personality and is pretty submissive. so i guess i'll try again with him. and this time maybe we will have better luck. i really will miss buddy though. he follows me around the house like a lost pup lol. but the other one she said is more like an i.g. so maybe it will work out this time.

Hdc it sounds to me like the dog is trying to astablish a leader ship role. Another thing he is a male and will try to challenge another male for the alfa male role. He needs to be shown that he is not the alfa! many times people confuse dominate behavior with aggressive behavior. They can cross over one enother if not propperly addressed.

lindalu reguardless of what he is trying to do...i can NOT have this behavior around my children! i have tried and tried to make him stop but these poor kids do something as simple as walking by him without even looking at him and he srikes at them! he did that to both of them yesterday! so i think...no i know! this is the best thing to do. i will miss him though. he loves me more than any other doggy EVER will. and i really hate it has come to this. but i'm glad it happened so quickly after getting him. that way the kids didn't get attached and all ya know. maybe the other little pup will do better. I HOPE!

Hdc thats to bad you cant keep him. There is no way to insure the next dog will not have the same behavior! Any dog that comes in to a home with young children will need some form of training to prevent the same thing from happening. Good luck with the next one, hopefully he will work out better for you.

It sounds like you spent too much time on the dog and he singled you out. I think that he saw himself as being 2nd in charge.

Its really hard hdc....we just got a new puppy too...and I desperately want her to be my daughters companion. The last one we had of the same breed was my baby...I had her for 15 and a half years and she was like my shadow. It was almost like I lost a leg when she died.

With the new puppy for the first week she was here my daughter was at school and I resisted temptation to cuddle her all the time, or drive around with her in the car because I wanted her first and foremost to be my daughters dog. I basically waited until they bonded first.

My daughter and her sleep together and when she sees my daughter she gets so excited. Remember to let your children bond with the dog first...I think it helps a lot
