I have a full breed AKC certified Rott my in laws have an AKC Pitt, they are known to be mean dogs. Its in the breed, but not all are bad. You just have to be careful. I do agree that all dogs will or can attack, but you have to look at the overall average. I am pregnant and have a 3 year old. My dog is 11 months almost a year. You just really do have to watch them cause its not that they may purposely attack but the kids or someone can accidently hurt or frighten the dog to make them react in a negative way.

theres a chance of dogs attacking in any breed, but if you look at statistics i think you will see there have been far more attacks from pitbulls than goldens. There has to be a reason why your home owners insurance rate goes up if you own one of these dogs. I agree with rottgirl, its just in their breed, to attack and be aggressive. I personally would never put my children in the same home as a pitbull. thats just asking for trouble.

I agree that pitts are statisticly more aggresive and attack more, but I also believe that it depends on how it is raised as with any dog. I have 1 blue pitt, my parents have one and my brother has one, They got their pitts because of my pitt. I have had mine for 5 or 6 yrs. He is afraid of our cats, rats, birds, turtle and anything that you pretend to have in your hand, he is a big baby, never once has growled, nipped or has done anything aggressive. When my hubby first showed me my bday present (my pitt) I have to admit, I was scared, pee'd off and I told my hubby if any growl or even an ugly face occured the dog was GONE!! When we got him we had three kids, now we have five. And we still have our pitt, he loves the kids. The pound were we got him suggested that he be placed in a family and I am happy that they did. Also I have a cop friend that comes over and he just can't believe how our pitt is. He has to deal with dogs everyday, he even got bitten by a pitt a couple months ago. And for him to tell me I have a one of a kind dog really feels good. BUT, just because I have had good luck with a couple pitts does not mean that I'm pro pitt. I only go up to the ones I know, as I do with ALL breeds of dogs.

And being that I wrote about a good pitt, I have to be fair and write about a bad pitt. When I was a teenager my parents were given a brindle pitt, she was very pretty and all, she was even nice but kind of touchy, she got prego and after she had her babies she became sycho! I was getting ready for school one day and she just bit my cats head off literaly for going near her food bowl. She got put down that day. We had her less then 6 months.

I think that all dogs should be judged individualy and not by their breed. That is just my opinion though.

oh that poor kitty. that must have been a little tramatizing for you and your family. At least you have the right attitude about your dogs. I have seen some of the smallest breeds that are far more vicious then some of these pitts we hear about. I used to have a shih-tzu when I was in high school. He was my baby, Then when I had a baby of my own out of high school the dog totally changed and growled and nipped at everyone. Granted, I dont know how much damage a shih-tzu could do when he goes on an attack lol, but to a small child it could be just as devastating as any other dog attack I suppose. I know its funny to compare a shih-tzu to a pitt, but just saying that any breed is unpredictable so its a risk we take owning any dog.

I totaly disagree, these dogs will attack. Its how you bring them up. I have 2 Staffordshire Bull terriers. Both very gentil.I was fishing a river with my big male.my dog was laying down,(sun bathing) and a big rotty came running over.My male done nothing untill he got 6ft in front of me,then he took him down.Unfortunetly the rotty died,i phoned the police ect,we could'nt find the owner. But when i shouted enough,my dog did stop.He did'nt attack,he just defended me. So i beleve pit, staff, rotty, any of the bull breeds, there are not bad,or agressive.Unless the owner wants them to be.Dogs are like children, they need disaplin.

I truly believe that it all depends on how you raise the dog more than anything.. some breeds are pre-disposed to certain behaviors, but I think the influence of owners has much more effect. My cousin has a full-blooded Pitt, and she has one 5 yr old and a 6 month baby, and the dog is always as sweet as can be to both of them. Tho I would agree that u just have to supervise interactions between baby & dog no matter what breed it is.

hi
i have mastiffs/rotties, they are brother and sister. They adore my 5 mo old, their day revolves around helping me with her, at least they think they are helping. lol... Since day one they have been amazing with her. Making sure she is ok all the time. Family thinks we are crazy for not kicking them outside when we brought home baby. As the boy is 170 and the girl is 130. Some dogs dont do good with babies, and some are great. I agree with you, that it is the dog not the breed that is unpredicable. Our dogs have got a bad rap because of bad parents.

love the animal, it will love you

ps my next dog will be a pitty. i love them they are great.

you know i have a pit ad rot mix also and he is the sweetest most GOOFY dog i think i have ever had. it is usually all in the way that you raise your pet and not the breed of the dog, most people dont know what they are talking about. my dog is a sweet heart and so loveable.

Don't look at what other people say.My friend has a small, cute little baby poodle and it bites everyone really hard.So it doesn't matter what breed it is.If your pitbull rott mix is friendly, then if people keep telling you that your dog's breed is bad, just tell them that your dog hasn't done anything to them,so how can they know.Good Luck!!

Theit temper totally depends on how tthey were raised as pups. my brother has a pit bull & he has a 2 year old child and the dog dosent even so much as growl at her. She rides on his back its so kewl!

i have been bit 6 times. not once by a pit bull breed, nor a german shepherd, now a chow, nor a mastiff.
i was bit by a golden retriever, two akitas, a welsh corgi, a labador, and a dalmation. all needed stiches. two were on the face, one on the neck , the two akitas, all over, i was attacked, and the rest were on the arms, or legs. all of the experiances with pit bulls, and staffys, or any pit type breed have all been pleasant. all dogs can bite. even your dog can bite. im not saying it wil, but this is an animal, it is unpredictable, you never know what will piss it off, and cause it to attack. the freak golden i was happily petting for over 30 minutes just freaked and bit me and llayed back down like it did nothing. animals are unpredictable, but assuming you dont leave any small kids with your pup, i would just say f- you to all the people who assume the dogs are evil, just cuz she doesnt look like a golden ret.

My daughter got bite by a great danelast november 3 days before thanksgiving (without warning). when she was giving it a hug like she did before. It tore her ear almost off, her eye and her cheek was almost completly off. we had him for 1and a half years before this happened. she has had one surgery and has to have more in augest. you never know how a dog will act sometimes. luckly she still likes dogs. she is scaried to death of dogs that bark or get in here face. We have a cocker spaniel that we have had for 6 years and he is the best dog. we were told that we would have problems with him because they say cockers are mean to children. but he has never growled at any child in his life.

did they realy tell you she would be a problem? thats odd, i have heard these dogs are GREAT family pets!. i believe they are......my neighbor has one, and she goes toa cancer reseach center, and basically just visits the kids! i think they are good family pets, and you may have been mis-informed. im so sorry about your daughter, and im very glad shes ok!!!! what happened to the dog?

it was our dog we go him when he was 4 or 5 months old. The dog was given to my groomer. she is a dog breeder , groomer border and handler. she has had many problems with the dog and it went to bite her daughter who is 20 years old she it is just him. my theroy is that someone messed him up pretty bad before we got him. he was always a little odd i thought but when he bite my daughter that night we had to find a home for him. i could not see putting him down just tring to find him the right home. but i know have told my groomer that i think he should be put down. the number of people he has bitten is up to 4 right now. i belive it was just a freak thing you always get one sometimes doent follow the norm. we are looking to adobting a golden retevier from a rescue. she has asked for the great dane back many times and it pulles at my heart a little that she could go throught that and still want the dog.

Thank you for your concern

I currently have an American pitt bull terrier. It is the 3rd pitt i have owened over a course of 7 years. I have never had one of my pitts growl or bite another human. I believe that if you raise your dog with love, respect, and affection that you will have a kindhearted dog. In the area that i live in, the pitt bull is a feared breed. although i have tried to offer education to dismiss the rumors and fears , the media do nothing to help my cause. Just 4 months ago a woman was attacked by her Labrador retriever, nothing was said, no newspaper article, not even achknowledgement from the news, but let a mistreated pitt attack someone and all hell breaks loose. I bet if the news would tell the history of a dog that attacks someone that 9 times out of 10 they were mistreated, abused, or even beaten. It makes me sick when someone says
' I hate pitt bulls' simply based on what they hear and see in the news, i invite anyone to come and meet my pitt and i bet i can chage their outlook. does anyone feel they way i do about the news media senselessy massacreing the good name of pitt bulls just to sell newspapers?

Pitbull bulls, Rotweilers are just two dog breeds that have a bad name, there are many other breeds that are far more likely to bite. The Lab, they are so over bread! there are more bites in america from Labs than any other breed. All dogs where bread for a purpose, some for guarding terratory others for hurding and some just to dig {ratters}. How you choose your breed should depend on your life style such as do you have children? how old? are you home much ? can you take it with you? and so on. It should not be based on Ohhh wow look at how cute he is!!!! You should always do your resurch before you take a dog in to your home, make sure it is the write bread for you and your family. Look for a breader that has a good reputation, the better bread the dog! the better their temperment will be. Dont purchase from pet stores most of them get their dogs from puppy mills, you will be more likely to get a poor bread dog from a pet store! As I said before! a poor bread dog can mean a less desirable temperment.

I really agree with you lidalu. people really should consider their lifestyles when aquireing a new dog. It has been my experience that pitt bulls are more like children than any other breed, because they require a lot of attention and care. my pitt sleeps with me and my wife(I am glad that we went ahead and got that california king size bed. lol) and like a child he has to go outside to visit his favorite tree and get a drink of water. I also think that a person should consider their living space and yard space when considering a pitt. Pitts need lots of exercise everyday, not just a brisk walk in the park. I love my pitt so much that i would step out in front of a moving vehicle for him. i am sure that i am not the only one who feels this way.

Pittripper- you are so write you do have to consiter the size of your living space when choosing a dog. I have a Red Doberman & a Schnoodle both are great dogs, well trained and wonderfully mannered. The doberman I chose for my disabled daughter because they are the only dog bread for people protection. We personaly trained him for obediance and assistance work. He now goes every where she goes and every one loves him, well the ones that arnt afraid of him love him lol! He also gives me a sence of relief knowing when my daughter is out she is safe, no one will try to harm her. My other dog, I call my little old lady dog! she is 14 years old and suffers from seisures. She is much smaller than the Doberman and she is a digger. She can dig out from under anything, I cant leave her unatended even in a fenced yard. But enouph about my dogs, I could go on and on! I just wish more people would resurch the breeds and learn more about what they where bread for. Then they would understand more about their instincts and why they do the thing they do. All dogs where bread for a purpose including their looks.

Just so every one knows, the American Pit Bull Terrior is not a recognized breed by the AKC. So if any one trys to say their Pit Bull Terrior is AKC registered they are talking out of their a$$! Another thing... AKC regestred doesnt mean you have a perfect bread dog. The AKC It is just an orginization that you can register a recognized breed.

from 15 years of experience with brindel pits I have noticed that they tend to be one owner dogs and very territorial of their owners territory, not just their own.
