We are getting a puppy for my almost two year old daughter for xmas. She has been around dogs alot, and knows to be gentle with them. . .etc. I am allergic to dogs, so need a non-shedder. Small is a must. Will be indoors, with working parents. Looking online I have narrowed down the search (I think). . . schnoodle, yorkiepoo, shorkie, cockashon. . . I've talked to breeders regarding each breed, but I need an unbiased opinion. . . any thoughts or pros/cons would be greatly appreciated.

Tonella23 can I ask why you chose a mix breed appose to say a pure breed, such as a Poodle or a Yourkie? The breeds you mention are mix breeds thus causing a high chance for health issues later. I had a Schnoodle she just last summer passed away, I loved her dearly but I wouldn't recommend the that mix for a toddler. The poodle breed has prose but can also have cons, the prose are that in most instances the dog will be hypoallergenic the cons are that Poodles are very moody with a arms length of potential health problems. Now mix the Poodle with a Schnauzer and you will have even more of a chance of having a snippy breed dog. Schnauzers are moody as well also with a huge list of potential health problems. Stay away from the Schnoodle! I would recommend you try to find a pure breed you will have a greater chance of having a dog with a more mannered temper.

i, personally, love the poodle :)
Next to goldens there my favorite breed. I had a miniature poodle. She was the cutest little thing. She didn't smell or shed. And they're usually good with children :)
and very loving, at least mine was :)

yorkies a great too. Be careful though, they bark a lot. schnoodles are a really good breed, but can be very expensive. cookapoos are nice too. My uncle has a cooker spaniel, but i wouldnt recommend them for small children, they become attached to one or two indaviduals and are very protective.

Why the mixed breeds? I guess those are the ones I hear the most about from other people. . . and the mixed breeds I've seen are SO DARN cute. I have read that there can be health problems though - which would suck. The poodle is a good thought. . . I would just have to get my husband past the 'manly ego' issue he has with owning a poodle. . . :-) I still don't know what the right decision is -- I am very thankful for you posting your thoughts and experiences. THANKS!

Tonella23, may I suggest two other breeds? They are also small and very good with children.
1)Papillon
2)Japanese Chin

I
t
is a great sight you will be able to see for yourself the health problems Poodles are prone to. My Schnoodle developed many of what you read. It is alway important to do a lot of research in to potential health risks, my Schnoodle cost me thousands in health costs due to brain tumors that caused seizures. She also had ear problems her whole life, infection after infection. Thats not all... she had severe allergies and eventually became deaf and almost blind. All that I have mentioned above you will read in the Poodle health link all costing thousands of $ through out her life.

Good luck! Ohhh Yaaaa....My hubby never liked walking my Schnoodle either, Lol!!!!

Tonella23, No the two I have mentioned are not hypoallergenic, if you are looking for a 100% non shedding then that would be a Poodle. Poodles are the only 100% non allergenic dog, I personally would not recommend the Poodle because their temperaments can be unstable. If you want a wonderful temperament then the Papillion and the Japanese Chin would be the dog. I am not choosing them for any reason but their overall demeanors.

Is your child allergic? If you are not sure then try taking him/her to a dog park or shelter, interact the child with dogs. Chances are good he/she will not be allergic to dogs.

Well....of course these are all generalities.
Obvisously not all poodles are mean and not all japanese chins are nice. :)
but overall yes...that's true.
I would really start too look around, having breeds in mind. You might find a really loving miniature poodle :)
or what ever type of dog you want.
It all depends on the dogggg

IMO right off the bat I recommend you not getting a dog at all. To many times I have had a owner surrender a dog for allergy reasons. I would recommend you foster for your local shelter (a breed of your choice) to see how it works out first.

that would probably be the best bet.
I wish i would have done that, it would have saved my family a lot of sorrowww
But if you're set on actually GETTING a dog....be careful in you're chioce

We have a cockashon and love her to death. She is full of energy- never stops. very smart learns tricks quickly. Needs a lot of initial work for potty training but has weathered the storm quickly. Good choice for a toddler.
