If you have never heard of this please take a look. If you are a dog owner or plan to be you need to go to this website and you need to educate yourself about SB 861 ! This does not just affect Pit bull owners! Do you have a German Shepard, Doberman, Rottweiler, Bulldog or even a Mastiff just to name a few? I live in Orange County, CA and this terrifies me. Not just because of the dogs I own but because of my constitutional rights that are being violated. If California can get something like this passed- your state is coming up next!I guess I've lived in my suburban la-la land bubble too long because this is a major surprise! Any info?????

I DARE ANYONE TO TOUCH ONE FREAKIN HAIR ON MY GERMAN SHEPHERDS HEADS!!!

Spare me...this is bullcrap!!! Vicious dogs are created by vicious owners. Most dogs that bite are the product of inept owners that never properly socialized their pets. Some people need to get some serious education before their ignorance results in the harming of innocent animals!! NEWS FLASH...ALL dogs have teeth and ALL dogs are capable of biting!!! I am NOT looking to debate this issue...not now...not ever! My views come from YEARS and YEARS of owning, fostering, and volunteering at shelters for abused animals. Some people can not handle certain types of dogs. END. STOP. PERIOD!!

And if you want to get technical...you have a better chance of being bitten by a Chihuahua than you do a German Shepherd. EVERYONE needs to research any particular breed BEFORE they bring it into their home.

As the AKC has been reporting, SB861 will allow local governments to enact breed-specific ordinances pertaining to mandatory spay/neuter programs. Permitting cities and towns to require spaying and neutering of "potentially dangerous breeds" unfairly targets all responsible owners, regardless of whether or not their dog has ever behaved aggressively. Furthermore, because SB861 permits mandatory/spay neuter ordinances for any breed, the bill could affect thousands of purebred fanciers who participate in conformation dog shows and responsible breeding programs.

The American Kennel Club strongly supports sound, enforceable, non-discriminatory legislation designed to keep communities safe for both people and pets. We further support strong enforcement of California's current dangerous dog statute, which prohibits regulating dogs in a manner that is specific to breed. Stronger enforcement of the existing law, rather then randomly targeting certain breeds, would resolve any dangerous dog issues that exist.

Proponents claim that SB861 is necessary because "irresponsible breeding contributes to the production of defective animals that present a public safety risk." If indeed pet population issues are a growing concern of California legislators, better solutions exist to address these concerns. Under SB861, however, responsible individuals, including purebred dog owners who bring millions of revenue dollars into the state each year, will be forced to pay the price for those who act irresponsibly and without regard for animal welfare.

That is my thoughts exaclty Dawn. My German Shepherd is a great dog. People do need to educate themselves. They see a picture of a cute puppy and go find one. Then 6 months later, they can't handle the dog. People need to research, and research until they feel confident.

I am in agreement with everyone. I currently own 5 pitbulls and come hell or high water someone will have to shoot me dead to mess with my babies. My dogs are my life. I have always had pittbulls and rottis alike. I have never had a problem. It's people that make bad animals... why don't they put some of these people to sleep that are making these dogs into what they become. A bunch of sickos !!!!

Over here in Ireland, it is illegal to own pittbulls; if you own one, and are caught, the warden will take it from you and destroy it just for being a pittbull, and you will be arrested and fined. I agree; vicious owners make vicious dogs. But I do believe people should need a licence to own a pittbull, as too many irresponsible people are raising them as fighting dogs.

Im tired of people being afraid of my pitbull. they should come to my house and watch my dog around my 3 month old nephew. The dog is the baby sitter.

But it's like that with a lot of dogs. I have a Jack Russell, and kids are afraid of him. People even ask if he bites. But everyone ADORES my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. When the Jack Russell has a better temper, and has never so much shown his teeth in his life. It's the Cavalier who can have an attitude sometimes.
