Hi everyone! Wow...I don't check the board for a couple days and there are lots of new postings. To answer Bree's ultrasound (32 weeks) posting...I just had an appt. with my pediatrician for my son and spoke with him about the kidney issue. He said as long as it's under 7 that it is fine and considered "normal". He said that is the marker that they look at for 32 weeks. The kidneys will grow and he said to expect your number to grow as well so you are under what the pediatrician would call normal. EVERYWHERE I have read says 7 is the cutoff for this at 32 weeks so yeah! Try not to worry b/c it sounds like everything is measuring great. As far as the weight of the baby....if you have gestational diabetes usually you will have a larger baby. It sounds like the rest of your measurements were good. I know how difficult it is to keep getting bad news. I have not spoken to my Dr. or anyone else about my fears with Downs Syndrome (not even my husband anymore) b/c I feel like people will think I am overreacting. It's just so hard. I go in a week from this Monday for my 32 week ultrasound. I am praying that all is good and that nothing else crops up. Please keep all us ladies in everyones prayers!

RT-
I was reading an old post from you this morning and you mentioned that your nephew has downs but had many other markers. Do you know what the markers were?
Just curious...thanks!

HI Bree,

I don't know what his markers were b/c he was adopted so I'm my sister in law did not have much information. Sorry I'm not much help...

Hi ladies
Well I'm 21 weeks along with my 2nd child. My first is a 2 year old boy, and this one is a girl!

I got the news 2 days ago that we have Pyelectasis. We are diliated to 5mm, with no other markers for downs. I did the nuchal translucent at 14 weeks, with the results from that and this last ultrasound my OB told me my risk is 1 in 5000. My OB doesn't think we should do an amnio, she doesn't want to take the risk. We aren't having another ultrasound until 32 weeks and I can't stand the waiting game. This is all still new to me. I'm very glad that I found this website for support. Be ready for lots of questions from me!!

First question- What is the percentage of women who's babies get fetal pyelectasis? I can't seem to find that info. Thanks a ton ladies!

Michele are you talking about a condition called Hydronephrosis?

Oooopppsss.....my bad! I didn't look further down to see the date on this post. It is an old one, had I noticed I would not have replied to it.

Hi Jolene-
Sounds like your baby has about the same level of kidney dilation as mine. I'm 22 weeks yesterday. I'll be playing the 32 week waiting game with you.
To answer your question, from what I've read, the incidence of pyelectasis in otherwise normal babies (prenatal) is anywhere from 0.6% to 4% depending upon the study. Most commonly I read around 1-3%. Do others agree?

Name: Bree | Date: Jan 23rd, 2008 12:04 AM
Jolene and Susan-
Everything I have read has been about 1-2% of all babies have pyelectasis. However, every doctor I have seen says that it is so common and I had one perinatal doctor tell me that she thinks it is closer to 4%.

Also about waiting until 32 weeks. This is simply my oppinion but I am currently 32 weeks and have had an ultrasound every mobth since 20 weeks to check the progress. This has not been easy as everytime I am so disapointed that it hasn't cleared up yet and I fall back into major worry mode (mostly about DS). I really wish I didn't have so many ultrsounds until the end because reagrdless of whether the dilation is gone or not the DS risk never goes away. I think that no matter how many ultrasounds we all have we are all in the same boat....the waiting game, whcih is sooooo hard!!!!

If you girls are anything like me this worrying is so consuming but I pray that we all have healthy babies!!

hang in there!

Bree, you and I are pretty much in the same boat. I'm 32 weeks along also. I have to say the waiting is extremely hard. I go for another ultrasound on the 6th of Feb. to check and see how his kidneys are doing. I'm hoping that they have resolved themselves. There is another board that I visit and read postings on. It has really been helpful in understanding what parents go through in raising a baby with down syndrome and it's helped me prepare myself if my baby does in fact have it. Here is the link in case anyone else wants to read about it. http://boards.babycenter.com/n/pfx/forum.as

.
We all just need to hang in there and hope for the best.

Hello everyone it's been awhile since I posted but just wanted to put some minds at ease. I was going through the same exact thing that everyone on this board was going through. I did extensive research and hounded all the doctors that I saw. My OB, perinatologist, and pediatric urologist. My son was born perfect. Pyelectasis was linked to Down Syndrome so long ago and I feel doctors need to update their info. It is perfectly normal for your daughter or son's kidney to be dilated. Please everyone try to enjoy your pregnancy. When he or she is born you will look at them and feel so bad that you were stressed out. I'm praying for everyone's healthy deliveries.

Hello girls....so I got all moved into my new place, and since i moved i had to see a new OB, (which was hard seeing how i am now nearly 31 weeks along) but anyways I saw him on monday and when i told him about the pyelectasis he said " Oh, thats no big deal I see pyelectasis during ultrasounds at least once or twice a week" So I was comforted by how small of a issue he thought it was. Since he was not the doctor who diagnosed the problem he was able to be more open with me without all the "legal" stuff getting in the way. He acted like it was as common as hearing a woman in her third trimester say that its hard to get a good nights sleep!!!! hope all is well!!!! *blessings to all*

I just wanted to repost my birth announcement from early October to help set some minds at ease. My son is now almost 4mos and doing great (except for sleeping! - I was spoiled with my first son).

"I haven't posted before, but read replies when I found out at my 20 week ultrasound in May that my baby had pyelectasis. I want to let everyone know I had a healthy 8lb 13oz boy on 10/4. His pyelectasis had been mild and had cleared up before birth, but I also had a positive for Down syndrome - 1 in 77. We had decided not to do the amnio since we wouldn't terminate anyway and 1 in 77 is only a 1.25% chance that there was anything wrong. Also I was 34 at the time of conception and turned 35 while pregnant and that made me feel better. Thankfully I was able to not worry too much and he was born perfectly healthy. So I just wanted to post good news that even with the soft marker and a positive screen your baby most likely will be born completely healthy."

Hi Ladies...i am a daddy here at this forum....like all of you we went for our u/s this week (22w.3d)and the technician found one kidney at 4.3mm.(pyelectasis)..the problem is that she jump up, turn the lights on and said the DS word...and ask if we want the amnio..Well, after several ultrasounds, all the screenings Negative, the whole baby is normal(Girl), we declined..After 3 days reading and reading, its absolutily ridiculous associate this with DS.Isolated pyelectasys and DS is like being afraid that you little baby might use drugs or be an alcoholic...the odds are very, very slow.......So dont stress about it as much and enjoy the pregnancy.....
Much love

Wow this thing really is common. A few of you notified they had sonographers see the same thing in the same morning/day. Technology is just getting better. More of you are finding that the soft link to Downs is an old belief system that can't be accurately backed up. More and more Obstertricians are starting websites Titled "The Perfect way to Terrify a pregnant woman", and "Soft signs in iscolation are of little concern" not many people are saying these findings are abnormal and still no body in the last 3 yrs has reported babies with any chromomal abnormalities. I pray the medical field will stop issuing misinformation and re-educate themselves with the latest findings so they can stop scaring us and we can enjoy our pregnancies. I hope all of you who are losing sleep can adopt the philosophy that we are all worrying needlessly. It's such a special time. Also my Dr who knew little about echogenic focci called a leading specialist who said he sees this several times a week and he didn't want to see me as I am only 32 and the rest of my ultra sound looked fine. He said the ecogenic focci would correct it'self, it in no way points to any type of heart defect, the heart looks great and the kidney's aren't dialated enough to even worry. The sonographer had mis-measured one of the kidney's, the 1 that was 4.5 is actually smaller and the cut off for reinvestigative ultrasounds is 0.5-0.7mm. So my Dr didn't even bother refering me back for a 32 wk scan. Look at all the good signs in your ultra sound results parents. I will never look at a baby's well formed brain or lovely long legs, well formed nose and lips or straight pinky fingers in the same way ever again.

Oops typo. I meant to say "The kidney that measured 0.45mm is actually smaller." not "4.5mm". he he

I am in major worry mode. So worried right now...aagh! I was wondering if anyone could share their quad results with me?
Thanks!

Hi Bree-
I'm sorry about all of the stress this has to cause all of us. When I fall back into worry mode, I start back at the beginning of this forum again and read about all of the good outcomes. I've also read the choroid plexus website (search pyelectasis on the webpage)...there are a lot of reassuring outcomes there as well including babies with multiple soft markers. There was a girl on one of these forums with a 1:3 quad screen who had a healthy baby. In the past 3 weeks, I've heard from a friend's sister-in-law who had a healthy baby girl after a prenatal diagnosis of pyelectasis and a coworker's friend with the same.

We all share the fact that we are or have worried ourselves sick for nothing, as I expect will be the case for you and me as well. My quad screen result was 1:1400, adjusted to 1:900 after the US. The perinatologist told me I had a better chance of getting into a car accident driving home from the appointment than having a baby with DS. Regardless, I was uneasy...I had an amnio scheduled last week, but had a melt down driving to the appointment. I had to have my husband call to cancel. ( I believe I made the right decision in retrospect).
If we are talking numbers...my OB said that in her 22 years, she has seen 2 babies with a normal quad screen born with Down syndrome. That's in 22 years...and she delivers babies for a living.
Hang in there.

Hi: I'm new to the forum. Im 18 weeks and they found 2 soft markers on the Utrasound. ( its a boy)
a bright spot in heart and bowel was brighter then shoudl be.
Anyone else in this situation? I was so frightened and they said I was additionally high risk because I'm over 35. Tommorrow I
have an amnio scheduled and I'm not sure if I'm over reacting.
This will be the last chance for us to have a child.
Any help on the topic would be appreciated.
thanks

Charlene So happy for you.. Congratulations and thanks for posting important information after your pregnancy.

Donna-
Congratulations! But sorry that you're going through this as well. If you are already scheduled to have the amnio tomorrow, my advice to you would be to get a good night sleep, don't stay up tonight til all hours reading the internet, and you should have some preliminary results (FISH) back in a few days to answer your questions.
My baby, and most on this site, has the soft marker isolated renal dilation. It took me a week or 2 of sorting through medical journals and what is written on the internet to find peace with all of this. There are other boards that probably talk more about echogenic bowel and EIF (Echogenic intracardiac foci) such as the message board on choroidplexuscyst.org, but my advice again, don't stay up all night tonight reading them (maybe tomorrow night :) ). I wish I had better advice for you regarding the amnio, it depends in part on your risk and blood test results, but your OB and perinatologist would be the best source of information here. In regard to the amnio, if it is done at a perinatal center that does a lot of them, the actual risk of the procedure may be far less than the commonly quoted 0.5-1% complication rate previously described. My center quoted me a 0.2% risk with amnio. Good luck, we are all here to support you.

Hi everyone,
I had my 32 week appt. today and our little girls kidneys were good. One measurement was 3. 5 and the other was 5.0. They should be under 7 so we were pleased. However, we did find out she is frank breech so hopefully she turns by 36 weeks or else they manually rotate her (ouch!). I guess it's always something to worry about during pregnancy! We are praying that all goes well for everyone.

RT,
I am happy to hear that her kidneys are doing good!!! I wouldnt worry to much about her position, they are still doing gymnastics at this point....hehehe...my first didnt turn until 39 weeks!!!! Congrats again!!!! *blessings to all*

Hi, we found out at 28 weeks scan that our little boy has kidney dilation on left.. it was 3.5 mm. Right kidney was normal. my doc was not too concerned but asked us to have another scan at 36 weeks to know the progress. we just came back from my 35 week scan. Left kidney has progressed to 6 mm now. Right is still normal i think. i have a follow up doc appt this friday and yet to know what doc thinks..
am a little worried that left dilation has increased.. other than this, we have found no other markers and little one seems to be doing well..

so, is 7 mm the cutoff for third tri? i guess we are just under the mark then but cant help but worry..how are other moms coping? i have another 4 weeks to go and cant wait for the D day..this is my second boy..:)

Name: RT | Date: Jan 29th, 2008 4:40 PM
Glowmom,
7 is the cutoff for 32 weeks (I'm not sure if it goes up higher as your weeks progress but b/c the kidneys are growing you should be going up in numbers (that means they are growing as well as the baby). I spoke to my pediatrician about this and he said you want them to go up and the cutoff is considered 7 at 32 weeks.

Name: glowmom | Date: Jan 29th, 2008 5:43 PM
Thanks RT.. i hope that means the numbers are looking good for now.. I will post what my OB says when i go in on Friday..
last when i talked to her, she had said that she was not concerned and it was just physiological and baby would outgrow..

Hi everybody......
Well, like i told you about our last week u/s where they found a 4.3mm in one of our little girl kidney, and freaked us out, today we went to our doc apptment....We sat down and when the doc came in i just look at him and waited to see his inputs...After hear the litlle heart and other exams, he told us that he's got the last ultrasound results and EVERYTHING was GREAT ! ! ! ! ! !i said WHAAAAAT..???? he had to show me the report and i had to read it for myself to believe it.....it really said NORMAL...so we explained to him what happened and he doubt it saying that everything was great but would get another u/s from another doc just to be sure and because we asked him....Go figure! ! ! ! !i told him that if i was the mom i would have a miscarriage by now, thank God my wife is confident and very easy about it...

just back from my appointment with doc. she said 5 mm dilation at 35 weeks is in normal range and she would not worry..,my fluid level is perfectly fine so she is not concerned,,, she said she would be writing a note to paediatrician in any case and he would follow up either way..

i am so relieved guys.. thanks for all your support..

Hi everyone!!! Has anybody gone through an early CS prior 37 weeks due to baby's enlarged kidneys? My OB discussed that possibility to me if the dilation progresses and progresses. At 26weeks, left kidney measured 8mm while right at 6mm. I'm bound for another ultrasound in two weeks for monitoring. I havent had any quad screening and the likes. Im running 30... Could anybody please shed light? I haven't read any posts stating early ceasarian deliveries brought about by the baby's dilated kidneys...I'm afraid I'm alone..I have thought of seeking a second medical opinion. I'm now on my 28th week and it has been my prayer not to deliver pre-term. Thanks...
