I have 3 boys. During my first pregnancy a white spot was discovered on my baby's heart at the 20 wk ultrasound. I was told about the Down's risk and chose to wait it out. After many months of worry, our son was born healthy and is now 8 years old. During my last pregnancy an enlarged kidney was discovered during our 20 wk ultrasound. We were naturally very worried and freaked ourselves out with internet research. At the time of his birth, our son had one functioning kidney. He is doing great and never needed the other kidney removed. He is high on the growth charts and his kidney has been functioning wonderfully. Our nephralogist has told us that there are many people walking out there with one kidney and are not aware of it. These people go on to lead very heathy lives. My point is, I understand the worry. The good news is most of these ultrasound findings turn out just fine Good luck to you all.

Why is pylectasis and white spots on the heart an increased risk for down syndrome?? So far I have not heard of anyone giving birth to a downs baby after learning that they had these 2 things found in an ultrasound. Why are they scaring moms like this??

My 20 week old was diagnosed with bi-lateral pyelectasis 4 weeks ago. We had a level II ultrasound today. We were very worried, but the internet calmed us a bit until they met with us for an hour before the level II scaring the crap out of you to only say, "oh, we don’t need to see you again" - it should resolve it self.

Thanks Rita. I am really starting to think my 5.5mm dilation is nothing to worry about - of course I will continue to worry until the baby is born and has the ultrasound done of his kidneys. These doctors always seem to need to present the worst case scenario, don't they?

Shannon - I also recently got the "we don't need to see you again..." at my 28 week u/s - I think it actually sucks - now that I have read everything I would actually prefer to have another u/s at 35 weeks (which was the original plan) just to have a better idea where things stand.

Ann...At my 20 week ultrasound they found 4.5 mm fluid in the kidneys. They never mentioned coming back for a 28 week ultrasound. They only scheduled me one for 35 weeks. I thought that was weird because everyone on this site had one at 28 weeks. Do you think I should have gotten one a t 28 weeks? I am 30 weeks now. Even if the dialation has gone away, I would still like my baby to have an ultrasound after he is born. Just to make sure ya know? Anyway, why 28 weeks? Is that when it is most likely to go away?

My Son born about two weeks ago. During my wife's pregnancy the U/S suggested that both renal pelvis were dilated, but after my child's birth within two days scan showed the right renal pelvis NOT dilated and the Left to be Dilated 12mm. So they prescribed for the child an antibiotic and also will follow him up for further testing. I notice the child is having a reaction with the antibiotics and vomiting and changing facial colours everytime he takes the antibiotics and discussed my concerns with the doctors and they told us to continue the antibiotics. I am realy concern about that. SO I was wondering what are some of the names of antibiotics that some of you have been prescriped and their reaction to your child's?. I am planning to get a further opinion on the reaction with other doctors.

Another woresome factor I found is that the antibiotics that some of Doctors are prescribing it are our off-Product-Licence meaning that the pharmatuitical company of the antibiotics will not gurantee at all safety of prescribing these antibiotics that they produce to infants under 6weeks, but they suggest that the prescribing Doctor can do so on his own will by taking into consideration the infants weight per each mg of antibitic they prescribe. WORESOME concept I would say. If the manifucturer is not guranteeing the safety why prescribe? Do you every thought that I would children are being used us gunny pigs for they future safety inclusion for these antibiotics. I am reallt very disappointed the medical profession that allows this type of behaviour as I belief if one prescribes a medication then they should be sure that the producer of the medice should prove that it is safe to prescribe to the person.

Hello Kristin - Not sure why the difference. To be honest I would have preferred 35 weeks since 28 weeks is "borderline" for 3rd trimester and they say most times this clears up in the third trimester so 35 weeks will give you a better idea of if the condition will continue to birth.

Ann-thanks for replying. I sure hope it has gone away. The ultrasound tech. scared me with the whole down syndrome possibility. Although I really dont think I need to worry. Hopefully everything is all good. I hope all is good with you.

I am wondering our daughter is at 26 weeks with 8mm and 10mm. This was her second ultra sound and her doctor wants her to come back in six weeks for another ultra sound her third. She is 23 years old and this is her first baby; a boy which I have read this is a common problem having pyelectasis issues.

My husbands cousin had a downs syndrome baby and I have a hereditay blood disease to be concerned about. I don't know if she has even given that history.

They don't want to have the next ultra sound but will, I told her I would look up what they found on the internet and now I don't know how to proceed. If nothing can be done until after the birth why worry them? Shouldn't her doctor have said something? Maybe she doesn't want to worry me.

Hello Andrea - I know the first response it panic. First of all - did they tell you how dialated there were. Should have been a measurment - like 5mm or 10mm etc..

There are two main "causes" of pyelectasis. Neither will result in any type of permanent kidney damage if treated. Cause one is sort of the "We don't know exactly why - but it will clear up on it's own anywhere from before birth to age 2". If this persists after the birth the baby will most likely receive anti-biotics since the pooling of urine in the kidneys can cause infections and will be monitored by a urologist until it clear us. The second main caue is obstruction - this is a physical malformation in the connection between the kidney an bladder - this is much rarer and does require surgical intervention...routine surgery that they do every day. I have read about a third cause called "reflux" -where the urine refluxes from the bladder to the kidneys - but behind reflux is generally either a "we don't know why and it will clear on it's own" or an obstruction of some sort.

Higher level dilation (7mm and up at 21 weeks) is more likely to requiire surgery...but my dr says MOST babies even with bigger dilation do NOT need surgery and some with smaller dilation do - so it is not clear cut.

At my 20 week ultrasound they found a brite spot on the heart, and small dialation of the kidneys. On April 24, I have to go have my 34 week ultrasound to see if the dialation has gone away. I am so nervous that I will go and get more bad news. My doctor says he has seen these two "markers" a thousand times, and I dont need to worry, because my chances of having a downs baby are still so low. But I am loosing sleep and I know I could be taking better care of myself. I am such a stress ball anyway, this has been just so hard. I am wondering if anyone has any words of encouragment or positive feedback that would talk to me. I dont want to be this nervous, but I dont know how to calm down.

ok now some of the people on here need to know what this disease is, so let me inform you all who are coming on here asd asking what this is Pyelectasis is a collection of fluid in the fetal kidneys causing them to dilate. Pyelectasis is also referred to as “renal pelvic dilatation”. It is a relatively common ultrasound finding, seen in approximately 1% of pregnancies, and is more common in male than in female fetuses. In the majority of cases, the fluid in the kidneys drains and does not have a negative effect on the baby.

However, pyelectasis is considered an ultrasound “marker”, which increases the chance that the baby may have Down syndrome . Although Down syndrome can occur in any pregnancy, the chance for Down syndrome increases with age. When pyelectasis is seen on ultrasound, the risk for Down syndrome is approximately one and one-half (1.5) times a woman’s age-related risk.

Down syndrome is the most common type of chromosome abnormality in liveborn children. It is caused by an extra copy of chromosome #21. Chromosome abnormalities involving a missing or extra chromosome are usually not inherited and are not caused by an exposure during pregnancy. Instead, they are caused by a chance mistake in cell division at the time of conception. This error in cell division is a random event that can occur in any pregnancy. Children with Down syndrome have some degree of mental retardation, characteristic facial features, and other health problems. Prenatal diagnosis by amniocentesis is available to test for chromosome abnormalities during pregnancy.

Babies with pyelectasis who are chromosomally normal have an increased risk for urologic problems that may require surgery after birth if the collection of fluid in the kidneys increases throughout pregnancy. If the pyelectasis persists, an ultrasound of the newborn kidneys is recommended. Typically, however, pyelectasis disappears by the third trimester of pregnancy and has no negative effect on the baby.

Kristen, I can relate to what you're going through, believe me! I had your 2 same markers and this is exactly how I felt until my little guy finally arrived. Just remember, the chances are overwhelmingly in your favor. I remember reading somewhere that by looking at soft markers, they've increased the detection rate of Downs prenatally by only, like, 3%. That's a tiny amount when you think about it. In other words, they're finding soft markers everyday and scaring women to death, but only the tiniest portion actually turn out to be cases of Downs. I just know everything will turn out fine for you!

The other thing is, since i couldn't always be rational about it (who can be rational when they're pregnant??), I would sometimes go on boards of moms with babies with Downs and just read their posts. At first, I thought it would scare me, but I quickly learned that these moms are completely happy, completely in love with their kids and leading perffectly "normal" lives (or as normal as you can get with little ones at home). They had their rough points in the beginning, but for some reason, it may me really relieved to know that even if my little guy did have Downs, I would eventually be just like one of those moms. I just knew that either way, everything would be fine. And to be honest, when I was in the delivery room, I wasn't really worried anymore. Just relieved that I was finally going to meet him. And when they told me he was fine (they were able to tell me almost instantly), I wasn't even that surprised, 'cause I think the rational side of me always knew. Sorry for rambling, and hope this helps!

Rita-Thanks for helping me feel better. It is so scary to be pregnant no matter what!! But to hear there is the slightest possibility of a problem is so scary. I know in my heart my baby is fine...like you said my chances are awesome for having a healthy baby. I guess its just really easy to think of the possibilities that can occur. I go in a week and a half for my 34 week ultrasound, they will tell me how the kidneys are doing....i pray pray pray they look good. But even if they dont, I know pylectasis can still go away after birth. Well anyway Rita thanks for making me feel better. I really appreciate it :) !!

I have to go for a 28 week ultrasound scan to check the kidneys. Is this ultrasound just like the one I got at 20 weeks? Do they go over everything?

Hi! I am also pregnant,20 wks this wk.I went in for my u/s at 17 wks and they seen somthing in the lower pelvic area so they sent for an level 2 u/s and the dr.said it could be downs syndrome.I was pretty upset that i didn't know what to ask the dr.he never said anything about the kidneys just that it was in the lower pelvic area.My AFP Quad test came back normal. He offered me a amino but i refused i love my baby regardless.I am just sorta stressed and home by myself all day so thats all i think of.I like reading everyones input at least we are not alone.

hello I just had my follow up at 25 weeks and my babies kidneys are still slightly dialated but my doctor is really not too concerned!! He wants to do another follow up in 4 weeks. I was really scard at first but now reading up on everything I feel better that this is VERY common. I am having a boy and my doctor reiterated the fact that it is very common in boys. For anyone who is having a girl and worried my best friend just delivered a healthy baby girl a month ago who had the same problem. She got her U/S when she was born and the doctor put her on antibiotics for two weeks, SHE IS FINE!!! I felt so much better when I came across this web page. I will keep everyone updated on my next appointment.

i am almost 29 weeks pregnant, with a babygirl, and as of now, her kidney's are dilated 6mm. my next u/s is may 16th. i am nrevous about the whole DS thing, even though my doctors have assured me that my chances are low. my lst ultrasound was the 18th of this month, and the doctor told me my baby's heartbeat was skipping. he said it was a common benign thing, but of course i am worried sick. i was trying to find some info on whether or not an irregular heartbeat is another marker for DS. starting on monday, i have to go 2x's a week for a NST to check the baby's heartbeat out. and with her dilation of the kidneys, my doc said that if they are 7mm or more at 32 weeks, then they would probably have to deal with it after she is born. SO.....does anyone have any advice or experience when it comes to the heart skipping a beat? thanks.....

Just to refresh you...... I am having a baby girl. at 22w they found Pyelectasis 6mm both sides, at 28 w u/s they found the same.
Just went for my 35 week u/s and the dialation is GONE. I am so thankful. BTW I am seeing a new group of Maternal fetal medicine doctors. when I told them how doom and gloom the other peri was, they couldn't belive it. She said "Oh thats ridiculas!"
I know I loved reading the updates on here , made me feel so much better. I will also update you when she is born! Good luck ladies and put it in Gods hands!

Crystal- HI how are you? I know you must feel worried sick. It is so hard having a baby in your belly and not knowing if everything is ok. When I went for my 20 wk ultrasound, they found the kidneys were slightly dialated and they also found a spot of calcium on the heart. Both of these are soft markers for downs, so I went and took a triple blood screen and everything came back normal. I was and am still nervous. I go for my 34 week ultrasound on Monday the 24th to check the kidneys again. Anyway, I have done tons of research and have never read that the heart skipping beats is a sign of downs. So I wouldnt panic too much. If you want to email me you can. Kristin0769@hotmail.com I would love to chat more about our situations.

I have found so much support and inspiration on this forum. Thanks to all you ladies (and men) who post your success stories. I guess when it comes down to it, every baby is a success, no matter what the outcome of their health scares. My husband tells me to stay off the internet because i worry myself sick, but I always feel reassured when i read this forum. I will keep all of you in my prayers and keep you updated on my babygirl. God bless and keep you all.......
