Hello there.
I am a freshman in college, majoring in Special Education and looking to interview a parent of a child with special needs for an assignment. If someone wouldn't mind answering a few questions, it would be truly appreciated.
1. How did you first find out that the child had a disability and what was the immediate reaction?
2. How did you educate yourself about the disability? Where doctors helpful?
3. Was it difficult to access services and at what point in the child’s development did you do so?
4. What are your biggest concerns regarding the child and his/her disability?
5. Was it difficult to adjust to the terminology and procedures when the child first entered the school system?
6. Can you tell us about your philosophy and beliefs regarding inclusionary practices in schools? Does it depend on the severity of the disability?
7. Has the school district been supportive throughout the child’s schooling? Can you tell us the main areas of agreement and disagreement?
8. Tell us about the child’s first day of school.
9. Can you tell us about the process for home schooling a child with special needs?
10. Please share IEP meeting experiences.
11. How do “typically developing” children respond/interact with the child? How has having a disability impacted on siblings?
12. How involved are you with the school?
13. Have you thought about other long-term care systems for the child?
14. What are some “dos” and “don’ts” for teachers when communicating with parents?
