Hi everyone! I used to come in here all the time while pregnancy with my little girl but having two kids now makes it so difficult to even get online anymore!

Anyway, the reason for my post is, i just wanted to know if any of you ladies have kids who have had a febrile seizure. My daughter is 15 months old and 2 nights ago she scared us out of our minds when she began having conculsions. Her jaw was closed shut and her eyes were wide open...my initial thought was that she was suffocating or something and we rushed to the hospital, where the ER doctor ran a ct scan and said she had suffered a febrile seizure.

For those of you who have kids or know of someone who had seizures, how often do they get em and what do you do when it happens? Im so afraid of it happening again, i dont wanna see my little girl go through that. My biggest fear is that it will become recurrent and she'll never stop having them. I just dont know of anyone who's gone through that, any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!

My almost three year year old has been having seizures for quite some time now. Have you contacted your childs doctor and had them make an appointment with a pediatric neurologist?

Well, the ER doctor told me she did not have to see a neurologist or anything like that...he told me that most kids outgrow them by the age of 6. Still, im gonna take her to her doctor today and see if he can refer me to a specialist.

Does your little one get them because of fevers? And is he or she taking any medication to prevent them? It's so horrible and scary

I have a son who had one just recently infact. The first time he had one was when he was about 18 months. A febrile seizure if it is going to happen it's going to happen. It is cause by the rapid rise in a fever. Doesn't matter what the number is on the thermometer and everything to do with how quickly it raises. I myself had a history of them when I was younger which unfortunately makes my children at higher risk for them as well. Usually by 6 you are in the clear, this does not mean that between now and then your daughter will have another one. My son is 4 1/2 now almost 5 and this is the first time he has had one in 2 1/2 years.

As for preventing them what I do is when my son is sick (this is usually when they are going to occur) is that even if they don't have a fever at the moment I give them some motrin or tylenol just to keep any fever that might arise from making it's appearance. My daughter hasn't had a single one.

There are no medication for this since it is not really a condition such as epilepsy (sp?). A febrile seizure is nothing more then a seizure that is cause by a fever that rises quickly.
