First I just want to say that I'm just looking for some healthy recipes or meal ideas not medical advice.

For about a year now I have been having bouts of biliary colic, but, I just recently was diagnosed. Biliary colic is caused by gall stones/sludge temporarily blocking the bile duct from the gall bladder which causes extreme upper abdominal pain for about 3-4 hours. I know the only real effective treatment is to have the GB removed, but since we are knee deep in debt and without medical insurance my only option right now is to try and prevent the occurances. They hurt like hell and now since I now know the cause I can try to prevent the attacks by eating a diet which doesn't stimulate the gall bladder to produce bile. Bile helps to breakdown fats and proteins apparently, so doctor told me to watch the fat and protein I eat.

So besides fruit, steamed vegetables, brown rice, and dry salad what can I eat? Got any ideas, it seems like EVERYTHING has protein or fat.

Any vegetarian low fat recipes will be good and I can tolerate a little lean meat or fish.

i could give you the name of a really good book, but you'd have to ask your doctor first if it's ok for you to try cause i don't exactly know what wrong with you....plus i'm a little confused because i would think that a diet that is very low in fat and high in fiber would be good...having no fiber will cause you to be constipated, so if you have a high fiber diet it stimulates the digestive function and produces more bile juice which help to remove the stones. that's how i always thought it worked, but you are saying you don't want anything stimulated...or maybe i read your post wrong!!!! AH...i'm not trying to give medical advice cause i'm not a doctor, but i'd hate to give you a recipe and it be the wrong thing for your condition...
ANYWAYS....the book is written by Dr. Gabe Mirkin and it's called: 20/30 Fat and Fiber diet plan....(20/30 meaning less than 20 grams of a day and 30 grams or more of fiber a day)....and it has TONS of really tasty recipes in it....so i don't know if this would be good for you or not...my grandpa had gallbladder problems and last year he had his removed and the big thing they always told him was low fat and high fiber...so IF you can eat that kind of stuff i would definately go buy that book....in the meantime....i have TONS of healthy recipes i will go and scrounge up....i'll be back late.r

You could jazz up your steamed veggies, rice and salads.
I have a cook book that is all just different kinds of salads.(funny that it's still called a "cook" book when it's for raw food...)

I add frozen veggies to my rice while it's cooking and some curry powder. Play around with different spices and seasonings for a little variety.

You can get low or no fat versions of pretty much everything these days since the entire world is weight obsessed so that kind of works to your benefit and protein...well avoid meat and eggs.

Try out some vegetarian or even vegan recipes.
Have a look at this website for ideas.

I know that I had a lot of trouble trying to find things that didn't bother me when I was waiting for mine to come out. I also found that after it comes out you may still have bile dumps that will cause the same terrible intestinal symptoms. Mine has been out for over two years and has not improved.

That being said I have found that if I use the weight watchers cook books that their recipes actually create things that won't bother me. I am not saying to follow the diet but the recipes are top notch and taste really good.

oh and I also make tuna salad with a little vinegar instead of dressing and I add a lot of veggies to it. I then put it on whole grain bread or I use multi grain saltines ( I like crackers of any kind though.)

Your kidding....where does the bile come from if you don't have a gall bladder? You didn't get any better when yours was removed?

I also have the same medical condition and have had it for about 20 years now. After many years and several hours of pain I have found the best way to help it is to eat as least dairy and high fatty foods as possible. Also starchy foods and acidic foods will some times cause pain. If I eat to much potatoes, spaghetti sauce or drink to much soda I will experience the pain. Also Ice cream, butter, sour cream or any dairy food in excess will cause pain.

I was going to try and explain the gallbladder function but it is simply to long so I found a great web site that may help.

Your liver produces the bile and some of it that isn't needed goes into your gall bladder where it is kinda dehydrated for lack of a better term and it becomes super potent. When you eat certain things it releases the highly concentrated bile to disolve them. When you have your gall bladder taken out your liver should stop producing as much ( there will still be times when it does) and you are in decent shape. Some people like me suffer from bile dumps every time they eat. It is not something that happens to every one! I for about 6 months ate within sprinting distance of a bathroom. It is stil a rule that the only thing you can do in the bathroom while I eat is pee in case I need to go!

Weight watchers is $12 a week and they have free enrollment right now I believe and after the first couple of weeks you have enough information to actually use the program pretty effectively and it is quite simple. I really enjoyed it! I can tell you that when I was on that diet my gall bladder was in great shape! Then when I went back on it after having it removed it really made the bile stuff better then also
