Please............I would like advice from everyone about my neighbors barking dog. It barks non stop when the owners are not at home. I've taken just about every step I can....we have no sound ordinance where I live....rural...so I'm pretty much on my own. I've told them over and over again...the last time I asked them to use a shock collar and they decided to move the fence back about 15 feet. That worked well enough until the dog figured out how to get into the secluded area. He's barking again right at the bedroom/office side of my home.
He's driving me insane...literally.
I've kept track of the barking and I've also videoed the dog but unfortunately my camera only last about 20 minutes on video mode.......
I'm ready to do something drastic....like bring in a dozen roosters that will crow at that crack of dawn outside their bedroom window.
Question: Anyone ever combat this issue? What was the result?
Any suggestions?
PLEASE! ↓

Get a dog that barks louder to drown it out : )
We live in a rural area too and everyone has big dogs. One of our neighbors leaves their dog out all night and it barks constantly. I talked to them about it but it didn't help. I ended up calling our animal control officer and she left a notice for them. Once she did that, it was up to them to decide what to do. They started kenneling him when they are not at home and it made a huge difference. Had they not done anything, I was supposed to call her back and she would have called our provincial SPCA to deal with them. They can actually fine, charge or remove the animal. I worked at the shelter here, so I'm not sure if they are doing anything special for me, but the dog no longer bothers us.
Another thing (I know it's mean LOL) is to take matters into your own hands and give the dog a spray with the hose. Our other neighbors have a dog that barked through the fence at us and our dogs. They told us to give it a spray with the hose when it did it and that solved the problem haha. ↑ |
| Oh, and another thought: Even though there is no sound ordinance (I know here in Canada anyway) if you still live in a residential area, you can still file a sound complaint with the police. It's still disturbing the peace. ↑ |
Thx Randi...hey won't do anyting here during the day....not even after 10pm. I'm sitting here right now and it's 9:54pm and that dog is off the charts. Nothing for him to bark at all...if they are gone.....................
...................(here'
s
a Maxie for ya) he barks. ↑ |
throw rocks at the damn thing!! lol...
i don't know....I live in a strata, so there's certain bylaws we all have to abide by. except, each household is only allowed one pet, but nobody ever listens to that, so there's about a million fkin' stupid cats roaming all over the place. they keep shitting all over our lawn and it's fkin' drives me nutty. we have an indoor cat and that's it!! but yet, i'm constantly stepping in cat shit!!
we're tempted to put out a bottle of anti freeze on our back deck!! lol....
I would just keep reporting it. I don't care where you live, you should still respect your neighbors, and if you feel there is any undue noise, i think you have a right to put in a compaint! ↑ |
that's the one main problem....there is no one to complain too! We have no laws governing it.
I'ts like it's up to each of us to do the right thing. They have no idea what I go thru when they are gone. And because they have "no kids" the dogs are their children and they choose to think the best.
Gawd....it drives me insane. Right now...for a week, I'm logging every bark.
I've bought every imaginable "stop bark" device on the market and that one dog could care less. Sad thing is....the one female dog that doesn't bark won't come off their patio now because of the ultra sound units.....don't know where she's pooping.....but not near my fence ↑ |
| Have you considered a privacy fence? They are great for sound buffering. I know that it should not be up to you to fix the problem but you may need to. I have two dogs that suffer from separation anxiety and I must lock one in my bedroom when I leave and the other goes in the car that I am not using. Do you live in the US? I know that people can buy over the counter medication for their dogs when this is an issue. I also know that some vet meds are very cheap. I only pay $9 a month for my over 100lb dog. ↑ |
are the dogs fenced in somewhere on their property? or chained up? cause if not, and you see one wondering around off the property, you could call animal control, and have them pick up the dog. lol....or you could throw rocks at it!! lol...
are the owners usually home on say a Sunday or something? you could make sure your kids go outside and play really early in the morning, and tell em to make lots of noise. OR you could on a regular basis start having friends over all the time, and play the music loud, and stuff, so they get pissed off, and tell em you'll stop if they shut the dogs up!!! lol....oooooorrrrrr.....get hubby to do some sawing of some kind in the early early morning while they're still sleeping.
our neighbors kept having parties all the time, and one night they kept us up till 4 am and woke up our kids, so the next morning at about 6am, hubby went and revved up the chainsaw!! lol....they got pissed at us, so we told em if they can start to respect the fact we have kids that need to sleep, then we'll respect their need to sleep in, in the mornings after a night of partying!! lol....
just start being as annoying as possible to them...so then maybe they'll start to realize they need to get a handle on their dogs. ↑ |
or throw rocks at it!!
i caught a damn cat shitting on my lawn this morning, so I started throwing snowballs at it!!! he didn't like that too much!!! lol ↑ |
have you looked into the bylaws there? i know there are many places in Canada have it so, whether you reside in urban or rural areas, dogs and cats are subject to the same animal control bylaws including pet registration and noise complaints from barking dogs.
have you called your local animal control? ↑ |
hahaha jeanie..you poor thing! Surprised you got enough left of ya....to write in complete sentences lolol!
Umm....yeah...bmes pretty much stated all. It is here anyway....a bylaw. Thingy is natch....first ya gotta contact animal control. And just fyi....here depending....it can take up to EIGHT complaints....before they will act. Too.....you should try and talk to other neighbors...cuz generally....ya need TWO at least of ya....to make it stick. Have you spoken to the people with the dog yet? OOPs as per....Maxie didnt read the entire thread lol....so maybe you did. Try that first. BUT if you find its like pounding salt...which hate ta tell ya...after all is said and done.....its sort of the same end result. :| Ya just cant get people huh.......to cooperate...if they dont see a problem....yeah they can be fined....but hey....thats AFTER you called animal control....AFTER a certain number of complaints from yourself....AFTER you have someone other than yourself complaining.....AFTER all that......its YOU that has the bigger headache the po'ed neighbors.....(gads dont make one wrong move after that depending on your neighbor humm :|) and.....AFTER the fine that amounts to......less then the trouble and headache you just went trough....and got. Bugger of a deal thats for sure........BUT do try and talk to the owners at least first. They may surprise you....and actually...do something. Who knows....but all the best there girl. After that...hey! I got a deal on ear plugs if ya want :) ↑ |
Hey Maxie...what do you mean "writing in full sentences?" I can do that with both hands tied behind my back.....LOL
Yes I have spoken with the neighbors. I think they are just hoping it's going to go away but it's been two years and I'm sick of it.
It's my own fault....I sold them the house! ↑ |
| oohooooooohhahahahah......oops ya sold em the HOOOOOuse! oh bugger for sure! Dang huh?!!! Shoot anyway....i dunno what ta tell ya flip....WAIT what about the ear plug offer......can have em real cheep....might even find pity on ya and ship em for free....lllllllllmao! ↑ |
| Well, you could always fire a gun in the air! Maybe this would scare the dog from wanting to bark .....ever!!! ↑ |
| OK. My Jack Russell used to bark when I wasn't home ... I didn't even know about it till my neighbour verbally attacked one day just after I came home from a 10 hour shift. She even phoned the council and complained after I told her I'd do something about it. The council detemined that it wasn't my dog being a nuisense; it was the dog 2 doors down, and that my dog only barked like about 3 times a day ... something silly like that. But what I did was I built my dogs runs in our garage instead of out our back yard, so that they wouldn't bark at all, and it worked. ↑ |
it's almost been a week since I posted this and he's still barking!!! Right outside my office window.........he's about 20 feet away and I tell ya I'm ready to burn my house down so's I can collect and move! And it not just this past week....it's been two years of misery.
Ok back to work...thanks for listening to my sorrows. ↑ |
| Hey Jeanie!! How have you been?? Other than this?? I am sorry I did not reply to this, I just don't know what advice to give!! I don't have a dog, don't live by anyone with one, and have not had that problem, so I don't know what to tell ya. I love animals...but I believe it is everyones responsibility to train and control their animals. So I would never suggest hurting the dogs...the owners, however.....fair game!! ↑ |
| Hi Michele....I'm still working but the noise is driving me nutttz! ↑ |
| Ear plugs?? :( Stereo headphones with your fave music??? ↑ |
ear plugs are not realisitc in my line of work....baby's crying you know. Besides....why should I have to accommodate?
Tonight when they get home and the dog goes inside.....I'm going to smear the chainlink fence with hamburger and hope his tongue gets stuck to it tomorrow morning...... ↑ |
| Sorry forgot about the day care!! I was just thinking of you sitting there working quietly now. LOL may the tongue be ripped out, then put some for the owner!! ↑ |
| Don't vent your anger on the dog. It's not his fault. Dogs bark for a reason, usually frustration. Is the dog exercised every day? Is he given enough food and water? Is he given human attention every day? Try calling Animal Welfare, see what they say. ↑ |
| Very very true. It really upsets me, my Mom is the same way. I took my kids to visit and she lets her dogs eat off the table!!!!! I threw a fit because her dog took food right away from my child right in front of him....off the top of the TABLE!! When I yelled she said "He's just being a DOG, He doesn't know any better and when Grandpa lived here he spoiled him and fed him from the table so they got used to it". I was like "So that is why their owners teach them and dicipline them and keep them from taking food from children on the table!!!" I was LIVID!!!!! ↑ |
| Have you thought about moving? ↑ |
| Or maybe call your local Humane Society. Where I live they will help you file a complaint. For the first complaint, they will issue a warning. If a second complaint is filed, the animal's owner could be summoned to court. Or maybe even call your police department to file a complaint. I have even heard about these devices you can buy that emit a utrasonic sound that stops neighbors dogs from barking. ↑ |
| Have your husband angrily walk over to the dog and yell as mean and hateful as he can...........SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This may scare the dog into not barking. My dad used to do that when he got sick of hearing their neighbors dog barking, and it DID help. ↑ |
Hi Lizzie, my husband is too passive...if he can't yell at me he can't yell at a dog....
I've decided to video tape the dog every time they are gone for about a week and then burn them a DVD and explain why I feel the way I do....I've borrowed a commercial camera with loads of time on it to do just the trick...I know the local weather man....hehehe ↑ |
| i'm telling ya!!!! throw rocks at it!! lol ↑ |
| Have you thought about contacting pest control? ↑ |
