I was wondering if any of you could help me out with meal plans for my daughter...

Brooke is 5 months old + 1 week. She has been on rice cereal/barley cereal for the past week. Usually I give her rice cereal in the morning after her morning feed then I give her barley cereal around 7pm, bath at 8:30 then I nurse her and put her to bed.

So, my plan was to give her her rice cereal or oat cereal whatever it may be in the morning just by itself. At 6 months I will buy her the rice with banana cereal and mixed fruit cereal. Then, I was going to giver her a cereal for lunch as well - whatever I do not give her in the morning. Then for supper I was going to give her peas or carrots...some kind of vegetable. Until she is 6 months when I will then start her on like beef w/broth or chicken w/broth. I was actually going to hold off on her luch for a few weeks until she is used to the peas and carrots and all that stuff for dinner.

I know lots of people say no solids before 6 months but her doctor told me a could start her on them a month ago - I decided to wait until 5 months though.

Please let me know if this is a good plan or what worked for all of you??

Also, I bought her some 1st stage sippy cups for christmas - can i start giving her small amounts of water? Or the jarred baby juices diluted with water??

I'm a first time mom and I've been pretty good with everything else but comming to food I'm kind of lost lol so any help would be greatly appriciated!! THANK YOU!!

Hi well I am a mom of a 6 year old and 4 weeks pregnant . It sounds like you are doing a great job . My only inputs is this.My brother has a 6 month old and the doctor said here in Mississippi we give babies food earlier than most and my brother being hisself haha said wasnt MS voted the fattest state? the doctor was a bit speechless. I myself did as you did and slowly added things to my sons diet . This can cause constipation so some diluted apple juice would help . I do think she is too young for any kind of sippy cup I dont think she could handle the fast flow of the cup .and if the nursing field it is told that water is so thin is substance it can cause choking . if you are nursing as well chances are she is getting what she needs . maybe some nursing in the morning as well or pumped milk .

Thanks!

The sippy cups that I purchased are stage 1-6 months + she has to suck before anything comes out of them. But thank-you for your input! Maybe I will wait on the sippy cup or just try pumped milk in them for now. I rather her use a sippy cup instead of a bottle - my friend is haing a VERY hard time getting her 13 month old off the bottle!

The only input that I have on what you are doing is that after feeding the baby cereal for dinner for a while it might make her wake up hungry in the night if you switch to regular baby food at night as it is not as thick.

make sure you're giving her the formula/breastmilk FIRST before giving the solids. solids just just be little samples for now, not ACTUAL meals. you don't want them filling up on solids then be full and not want the breastmilk/formula (whatever you're giving her) which is the MOST important nutrients at that age. sippy cups are fine. i was told to try and stay away from juices. too much sugar. water is fine. again, as long as their not filling up on that andnot taking their milk. after one year of age, is when i started giving more solids...actual meals....and also i waited till my son was over a year old before giving him juice. and i mix it with 3/4 water and a 1/4 juice. and i only give him one cup a day. my daughter hates juice so i'm lucky!!! lol...
in my opinion, starting solids at their age is totally fine, but should just be a sample...taste...experiment....getting them used to solids, until they are a year old.

good luck!!! :-)

I agree with Bmes 100 percent.......

do not make them actual meals, just tastes......because the breast milk or formula is the best for baby at this time.

Thanks ladies. i am breastfeeding her before she gets solids. I give her solids about 15 minutes after a feeding and she'll usually eat about 2.5 to 3 teaspoons of baby food.

So even when she is eating table foods I should breastfeed her first?
