Hi everyone, Im new here. Actually new to forums. Wanted to see if anyone else is concerned about toxins in our homes caused by all the cleaning we do ↓
|
|
Welcome,
Are you trying to sell us something? ↑ |
| No, but I do use evironmentaly friendly products. Never been on a forum and thought this would be a good discussion ↑ |
| I find it's easier to just not clean my home. ↑ |
Dawnn,
I have been on here for two and a half years and am a happy, healthy melaleuca customer. Thank you. ↑ |
| Ive heard awesome things about melaluca. they have supplements too right? ↑ |
No I am not concerned with toxins.
I use bleach and tea tree oil....I LOVE bleach....kills those germs...lol ↑ |
| I love bleach too, but I hate the smell, my throwt gets itchy for some reason when I use it. ↑ |
| Who has any time to clean ! I hate it. actually i should be cleaning right now. I have a mountain of laundry to fold and my floors are prettuy discusting LOL ↑ |
Yes, Mela has supplements and even food....cookies and cereal etc. I just tried the cereal this month as I was scared to buy it and not like it so I did it with my bonus dollars and loved it.
Winn, bleach is so bad for you hon. The thing is if you read up on tea tree oil, it does all the things that bleach does, so if you are using that you don't even need the bleach!! Bleach give me an aweful headache and sets off my hubby's asthma, we don't even have it in the house!!
Time, yea, I guess I would have time to clean if I wasn't on here, but who wants to!! LOL I need a chance to sit down when that buggar is finally down for a nap, then gotta go get Chris after school, stop by the realator and pay the rent for Feb...it never stops does it?? ↑ |
| hey hommommichele, can I call you michelle? I dont have bleach in the house either. I stopped using it last year, Does t tree oil really work the same as bleach, never even thought of that! ↑ |
| I also think everyone should do there part on helping the planet! Havent we done enough damage. I know it can be a pain in the but but this is our home, where will we go when its ruined? I live in Calgary and the recycling program SUCKS!!! ↑ |
| Im just starting to learn about all the stuff we pour down the drain. OMG I had no idea! ↑ |
Yes, you can call me Michele, but I only use one "L"
Yes, our soluguard botanicals is EPA approved to kill 99.99% of germs in hospitals, daycares etc including MRSA and even the HIV virus and works just as good as lysol, yet is not a neurotoxin (lysol is actually a licesenced pesticide and banned in many countries) and it has tea tree oil as it's main active ingredient. It is amazing how many things are in our own environment that are so much better than anything we could cook up!! :) ↑ |
Look at this, it was in the headline news yesterday:
http://www.msnbc.
msn.com/id/22979800/
Amazing
,
This is why I love what I do now, I was a nurse before I had to come home, so I did that because I wanted to help people. I am glad to be able to do something for good!! ↑ |
I live just out of Calgary Dawn...
I use tea tree oil for everything as well... There is also a great brand called method and they have things like natural dryer sheets etc. Stuff that I missed when I took all the chemicals out of my home. ↑ |
| Ya Ive tried method too, but its too expensive, and its too sented. I know of a cheaper brand and its way more concentrated too ↑ |
| Randi Where abouts do you live? I want to move outside of Calgary but not sure where to go, My husband works here and is very stuborn ↑ |
What brand is that? I love the Lavender scent on the dryer sheets... All they use is some lavender essential oil, so it's non toxic.
I live about 1.5 hours from Calgary. ↑ |
| Randi Good to know! I love lavender too. I thought maybe you lived closer like airdre or cochrane, ↑ |
| i love bleach..i love the smell of bleach..makes me feel like i get my home clean..i also like what we use in the salon..it kills a bunch of stuff..but then again..i also like a bit of stuff to stay here..builds up immunity.. ↑ |
| Bleach does kill germs but what are the fumes doing to your lungs, that "clean smell" is fake sense of clean . It actually can do more harm than good. After I switched to different products i missed the clean mell too. Im used to it now ↑ |
| my girlfriend had to spend 48 hours in the hospital this summer cause when she was cleaning her bathroom with bleach she passed out. Luckily her brother noticed ( it was his house) and they had to call an ambulance. I guess those warning labels are right ↑ |
My hubby's mom used to mix ammonia and bleach on a daily basis to clean their home. Now he has no lungs and no heart, and neuro problems. Yep, you can smell "too clean"!! Here is an article I wrote about the hazards of bleach after listening to a conference:
Notes From Info Call Tuesday Feb 7 2006..Talk by Kay Heiser BSE founder of Healthy Choices, a consortium of doctors and nurses and other health professionals that studies and educates about the products on the market and their effects. She is nationally known and has been doing this for 25 years on TV and radio. I was privilaged to hear her call and take some notes to share.
Toxic chemicals found in common household products
Account for 2 million poisonings in children under age 6 per year per Poison Control Center
20,000 of those from a very common household chemical ~ Chlorine Bleach
Effects of Bleach short and long term per studies from physicians at Oregon Health Sciences Center:
Misscarriage, asthma, headaches, pulmonary edema, hardening of the arteries and many more.
Aggravates heart and respiratory conditions per MSDS sheets, required for all products in businesses, but not in home. Bleach used in factories and hospitals the person is advised to wear gloves, eye protection and face masks!! But we use it like water in the home!!
Toilet Bowl Cleaner ~ Fumes Corrosive to metal!! What does it do to lung tissue?
Lysol contains a pesticide!! That is a neurotoxin!!
Labeling laws? Do not apply to home use products! Only commercial use. There are NO government agencies in charge of chemicals used at home!! The EPA has done studies, but has no power to regulate privately used indoor chemicalls, only things in the outdoor environment!!
50% of all illnesses have been linked to poor indoor air quality!!!
She then referred to the studies of umbilical cord blood which I do have a copy of: you can find this study at :
Reuters "[http://www.reuters.com/]
On to more chemical testing facts:
Out of 80,000 new household chemicals, only 1/4 are tested, and never together! As you know many chemicalls react differently when combined with others, and have been found to be 7,000 times more damaging when mixed then when alone, a fine example being ammonia and bleach.
Toxic household chemicals have been found responsible for 1/3 of cancer cases in the US, and that this can be cut by 1/2 a million by simply getting rid of the chemicals!! That's half a million people!!
Allergies:
Toxins build up in the tissues of the body and increase the histamine response to other stressors in the environment. Therefore lowering the toxin buildup in the body reduces allergic response to other triggers. I myself am allergic to pollens and always felt it at the change of seasons...no more. I found this interesting therfore as an explanation.
Chemical outgassing:
Use in ventilated area and keep the containers closed, ever notice how if you walk down the cleaning isle in the store you still smell them? This is outgassing, the vapors are constantly going into the air through the bottle. It is documented that children have even had severe asthma attacks in the cleaning isle of the store! I personally used to like to stand by laundry mats and smell the exhaust from fabric softener..now that I have learned it is a neurotoxin I don't do that anymore!!
Labels:
"Do not Induce Vomiting" This is the most toxic of chemicalls and can be aspirated into the lungs causing death immediately
"Corrosive, avoid skin contact and rinse immediately"
"Harmful or fatal if swallowed"
"Call physician immediately or seek immediate first aid"
These are products that can cause immediate death and should be replaced first if you are looking to rid the chemicals in your home.
Unfortunately things that cause long term effects such as cancer or are birth defect causing have NO requirements for labeling!!
More translations:
Caution - means there is an eye irritant. Almost any cleaning product should say this!
Warning- means one teaspoon can kill an adult!! Some consciensios companies will use this in place of caution for eye irritant as they don't have any thing stronger!! This translation applies to commercial products.
Danger- Means five drops can kill an adult! ↑ |
| Michele you sure know alot, thanks this has been really helpful! ↑ |
| well your not suppose to mix amonia and bleach..that leaks gases....and your never suppose to use bleach full strength..nor drink it..or course it can be fatal if you drink it.. ↑ |
| Nope, you are never supposed to mix it, it can also be fatal straight if you inhale it long enough or often enough. My mother in law though, well, she was good at some things, not so bright in others. She thought well they each clean well, they will do better together........ ↑ |
| Your basically not supposed to even be around those cleaners. They all have warnings USE RUBBER GLOVES , DONT DRINK, CALL AN AMBULANCE RIGHT AWAY!!!! lol its funny how these warnings are there but we have no problem inhaling them. Its not safe to really even use them is it . Ha ha they should say where a gas mask too. ↑ |

| michele in response to you love what you do, you should PM me cause im always looking, if something is better than what im doing I wanna check it out, dawn1@live .ca ↑ |
Dawn as it says in my report in industries the MSDS sheets do say that for those products. OSHA requires it to be recommended when these products are used in industry, but they do not regulate home use. In your own home you are allowed to inhale whatever poison you like!!
