Both the kids want Ipods, Brittani (14) wants $50 shoes and a cell phone (I settled on a Tracphone... but I'm NOT buying minutes for it every week). Brandon (9) wants a Playstation 2, a VideoNow (I had no clue what that was and had to Google it, lol.), and a basketball hoop. Plus they both asked for little things (clothes, dvds, etc.) I don't know what we're actually going to be able to make happen. Their lists totalled nearly $1,500... and I narrowed them down to $400 each. That's still a ton of money though.

It is so hard to shop for my children. They are not really pickey, but they never seem to play witht he toys that we get them for very long. This year my step son wants a nintendo DS it is about 120.00 I think that is a reasonable price he also wants a couple of games to go with it and some other small things. My son on the other hand wants a PSP (playstationportable) It is 250.00. that is alot of money for one toy. Plus you have to get games for it. I am pretty sure that we will get them those items, but I had to tell my son that if he chooses the PSP that he will only get a couple of other small things and that his brother would have more presents because his stuff cost less. I seems cool with it, but I am going to feel bad when he only has 3 things under the tree.

My sugestion is to start off small-- most little kids like the box better then the toy anyway. I think that I started getting my kids bigger gifts to early, because now it is hard to find something for them. When they were 6 they each got a TV for their room (prior to that they shared a room and they always had a tv in it, but when we moved they each had their own room and I thought that they needed new tv's) and a Nintendo game cube and a ton of other little stuff. that was pretty big for their age, then when they were 7 They each got a DVD player, a DC player, some CD's and Movies and a Play station 2 and games and a some other small presents. Last year when they were 8 they got motorized scooters, A fish tank for their rooms, Ipods, and Portable dvd/tv players. I now realize that dvd players and cd players and I pods portable dvd/tv etc....would have been more suited for them when they were 11 or 12 now I have a very hard time trying to figure out what to get them, because I didn't stick to age approiate things. So that is my advice for what it is worth.

I think that books are a great idea for baby gifts... you can never have to many (because do you really want to read the same ones over and over?)... Besides, I remember being little and pulling all my books down to look them over. Kept me busy at least. I am going to St. Vincent De Paul or Goodwill and buying tons of books for 25 cents each.. sometimes 10 cents. I think my mother's gotten 30 or so for me already. They are in good shapes - and they're just books.. who cares if they're used? You could get away with spending basically nothing for them.

I just can't believe seeing all these "Santa" requests. Serina, Nicole, jillw - THAT's INSANE! People die from hunger and diseases in the world. You can buy a goat for $50, and tell your kid that this is HIS gift - the gift on behalf of him. Or a care pack, or 3 guines pigs (that's edible like rabbits) for $35. That's the best to teach them GIVING.

3 guinea pigs $35
2 hens and a rooster $50
2 mosquito nets $32 (to protect children from malaria)
antibiotics $30
build greenhouse $500
diary cow $600
backpack with school supplies $25
goat $100
moringa tree $125
3 warm blankets $30

(at World Vision Canada)

goat $58
donkey $120
women's training $53
chicken $15
emergency kit $74

I did get toys for my kids, spent $50 for one and $150 for the other, in September yet. But I recently realized how wrong this materialism is, for the sake of our kids growing giving, not taking.

E I agree with you that giving is the best gift. my children do not believen in santa and we are a very charitable family. My boys each save their money and buy gifts for children who are on a list at our church. We as a family including my parents go shopping and buy gifts for other families who are in need. My children are very aware of how important giving is. they also go with our church and bake cookies and cakes and that are then taken to nursing homes and homeless shelters. I have been blessed with a good income and have been blessed whith parents who have a much better income, but they have shown me and in turn I have shown my children how very important it is to give to both God and to others. I know that the gifts are expensive and to some people may seem a little outragious, but my children are not looking at price tags when they think of a gift that they want. Also they would both willing give up christmas gifts all together to allow another family to have christmas. the have huge hearts and are 2 of the most giving boys I have ever met. I think God that I have been blessed enough to give to them and to others. Also my step son's mother is very poor and she has 3 other children. Since I have known them every year my parents have provided her children with 90% of their christmas prsents. They buy them and then give them to her to give to her kids.

That's great to hear, jilw. I guess it's always a struggle with everybody, the balance between the things we want and the right thing to do.

I try to do the toy drive every year. At my husband company christmas party they do the toy for tots which I also do. Last year I donated all of my barbie doll to Toy For Tots. I had like 60 of them but I figured I would rather have them go to some little girl then to watch my son destroy them.

E jst so you know ..since you broght it up. I said what the kids wanted NOt whatthey are going to get we are pay check to pay check. kids will want things. I do my shoping at good will or Salvation army . If I had money to give I would make sure the childern of America have food and shelter then branch out to other countries. I do give what I can . If you notice My husnabd only wanted me to fell well. he is such a love. We do not exchange gifts to echother so we can give to our kids...Take a long time to save for them ..I do know whayt you mean but If I had alot of money I would share it...for sure.

Serina, maybe I came across harsh. I understand that small personal gifts are OK and they are one of the pleasure of Christmas. What I was against was the wishes and gifts in the THOUSANDS of dollars. I think that's crazy. There must be something missing in the child's understanding what Xmas is all about. A Nintendo is an expensive enough gift (for example), the rest could be giving, instead of again taking? Maybe there's an important message that we fail to teach - that would work exactly at this magical Xmas times, the lesson of un-selfishness?

My daughter really wants that new Bratz Mansion. The thing is huge and she has enough toys in her room already. It has a jacuzzi, dance floor, elevator, and cabana. Too cute. Since it is a big gift it will be from Santa. ;) She also loves Polly Pockets and Bratz dolls. Believe it or not, she never asks for much at Birthdays and Christmas, it's odd. But we spoil her anyway. ;)

Julia, how old is you is your daughter? My is 3 and obsesed with BRATZ dolls. She told me that she only wants bratz, no barbies or anything. She printed off a 10 page list of bratz things she wanted off the websire.
