We adopted a 16 DAY old baby girl 24 years ago. My husband and I were elated. We would have had numerous children if we would had been able to conceive. WELL over the course of time it became evident there were "issues." Those issues were mental health related. One of the things she was diagnosed with was "Emotional Detachment Disorder!" Apparently many adopted kids have this disorder. She just happened to have two birth parents with their own set of emotional health issues! Meeting her birth mother it is apparent that at least one of her own children have mental health problems. Now my 24 year-old adopted daughter has a daughter of her own, and it feels like "old-times" to me! Please investigate Emotional Attachment Disorder if and when you adopt, so you can hit it head on or hopefully divert it. My daughter has also been diagnosed with "Border-Line-Personality-Disorder", which was explained to us as the step child of Schizophrenia without hearing voices! It has been a ride, but it is also a blessing to be a parent. It stabs us in the heart when she makes mistakes, but we love her anyway! Our new granddaughter is a joy, but I fear the worst and pray to God that she is only strong willed!
